Repeating a course

I got Ds in Math 17A and Chem 2A and an A- in Com 3. Should I go ahead and repeat Math and Chem, just repeat one (if so which one),or not repeat at all? Please keep in mind the 16-credit limit and the fact that I’m a freshman. Thanks in advance!

You should repeat the courses in order to move on to the next level, but if you can’t repeat both courses at the same time, then just repeat one course for winter quarter and then repeat the other course during spring. You can also repeat the courses in summer if you want.

I think I will repeat them but which one should i repeat: chem or math? A D is passing so repeating is a choice, right? I don’t want to use the 16 credit limit i my first year. BTW, my major is Bio Sci. should i repeat chem or math? Which one is more important for this major?

Look at the other courses you were planning to take next semester. Are either of these prerequisites for those classes? Can you move on to them with a D in the prerequisite - and would you want to? If these are prerequisities, I would think you would want to have a solid understanding of those courses before moving on to something that uses them as a foundation.

You have a few different questions.

You need to retake both. Majors want a C in all prerequisite courses. Grad schools and professional schools want to see a B or better. Confirm this with your adviser.

That aside, you should retake both because if you earn a D in those courses, you are not ready for the next in sequence. But before you take either, find out why you got D’s. Did you party too much? Did you not study correctly? When taking Math, Chem, and Physics in the future, go to the SASC and do the small-group tutoring.

In my humble opinion, for a bio major about to take intro bio courses, a good understanding of Chem is much more important than a good understanding of Calculus. Take the Chem first. (True, Bio uses some work with series, progressions, geometric and log expansions, but you’ll eventually find that the part of Math that concerns Bio people is statistics.) When you go to repeat Chem, find out if you passed the lab section and can take a CHE 2A ARO section.

bio is not a small major. i would retake both just to make sure you keep up and don’t run into any problems falling behind on your four year plan. but if you can chart it out and you know you can afford to take an A course in the Spring, then you may want to space it out if you think it would help.
