I'm in the college of chemistry and I'm majoring in chemical biology. I'm required to take Math 1a the first semester, but I don't think I'll be able to pass since I'm terrible at math. Is there any way I could take a course at a community college that would replace math 1a and 1b while still fulfilling the requirement?

Just take Math 1A and 1B, if you aren’t good at math then I don’t think CoC is for you.

Well, it’s not that CoC won’t be for you, but your major will require also Math 53 and Math 54, which rely heavily on material learned in math 1a and math 1b(or their equivalents).

[Welcome to ASSIST](http://www.assist.org) will help you figure out what classes at your community college Berkeley will accept as equivalent to Math 1a and 1b at Berkeley. I am pretty sure you can take a community college course this summer (before your first semester at Berkeley) and get transfer credit. However, after you start fall semester, I would definitely check with your advisor before taking any classes at any other schools - even UC Extension - because Berkeley may not accept them for transfer credit.

Berkeley also has a summer session, but I think that enrollment closed May 14.

Take Math 1A and 1B at Berkeley but take a light load so you have extra time to work on homework and with a study group or tutor. You can catch up with a summer session or something.

I think most College of Chemistry students come in with AP units so they don’t have to take a 16 units every single semester to graduate. If there is a class you think you will have trouble with, take 12 or 13 units that semester.
