How does USC look at grades? How do UC's respond to the scenario below?

I took a geology course at my local CC in Spring 08 and received an F because of family issues (missed classes etc..)

1) I am now retaking the class and am 100% certain I will receive an A. Since I am retaking the class does it replace the F in my GPA?

2) What would've been better in that scenario - an F or a W?

3) I am planning to transfer to Marshall after I gather all my credits and req. and I'm 10000% dedicated to getting straight A's and I'm sure I will -

Will this single F replaced by an A effect my chances of getting into Marshall?
What will happen to my GPA?
What will admissions see in regards to my now A grade in geology course?

PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE Help me because I found a few posts online going both ways and I'm GOING NUTS - seriously it's affecting my health. I will do ANYTHING to get in.

Determining Your Transfer and USC GPA
For the admission decision, all grades in USC transferable courses (including grades of “D+” and below) are calculated into the grade point average (GPA). USC takes into account plus/minus grading. Marks of credit/no credit, pass/no pass, withdraw, incomplete, no record, missing grade, and passing course in progress do not affect a student’s GPA.

If you repeat a transferable course, each grade earned in that course will be used to calculate the transfer GPA for admission. Further, USC does not honor academic renewal or academic forgiveness programs that allow students to improve recorded substandard academic performance."

Response to my post in USC thread.

Does this mean I am royally *****ed? No chance at marshall?

I am really close buds with my teacher that failed me and I didn’t have this knowledge in the past.

Can CC professors chance grades to W by their own will?

I am sweating bullets and hitting myself in the head :'(

"1st thing you need to figure out is if the spring score will show up on your transcript. If it does not show up then you can conviently forget to report the earlier class.

Considering you were in high school they would not assume you were in colege then anyways. The thing is you need to find out if the earlier score will be on your transcript or will be removed (thus USC will not know so no worries)

If not you then will need to argue that you withdrew from the course and see if that works. If you mentioned the lack of transportation that could have been an incomplete but that is retroactive now so hard to argue in October."

So basically I took the course while in HS in spring 08. Can I just get a transcript starting from fall 08 and submit that?

Any insight would be GREATLY appreciated.

My backup would have to be CAL HAAS - how do UC’s measure these types of things?

Your backup is Haas as in Berkeley? seriously??? if anything USC Marshall is a SAFETY SCHOOL compared to Berkeley Haas although they are both very good business schools I just don’t see how you could possibly think that Berkeley is a backup or safety school to USC when it’s as hard if not harder to get into than USC

but I would say that a W would look much better than an F because you can explain a W to a school like USC or Berkeley, you can’t explain an F to schools with their academic prestige

and no your A wouldn’t replace your F because you took the class a year later, and are expected to better the 2nd time, also you can’t just hide your F and not send it since you are bound by any college in the nation to submit all grades from any transcript from any institution you have attended because failure to do so can cause your admission to be rescinded at any time before or after you have been accepted and even if you are a senior nearing graduation

I think ( but it is only a guess) that your having been in high school when you took the class is a relevant factor. Was the class for dual credit? I think you should speak to the Registrar at your cc to find out whether and how classes you took there while in hs are reported on your transcript.

I was never considering going to HAAS because of the level of difficulty but if I can’t get into USC my only other logical choice would have to be HAAS cause I want to stay in CA and go to a top 20. I can go to UCLA Bizecon no problem but it’s not that great of a program from what I hear. The thing is atleast at a UC my GPA would stay 4.0 if I do complete CC with all A’s (very feasible)

This means I’d have to bust my BALLS with EC’s to get into HAAS but I’m already working on my rep and starting and managing an LLC with 250K revenue during its first year should have some level of recognition in my essay.

Yeah I’m waiting till Monday to call up the transfer center and see if they can send my transcripts starting from Fall 08 since I was a HS student in Spring. It was pretty much a class I took just to be able to take 4 classes at my HS instead of 5. Anyone know if this’ll work?

What if I finish this semester at my currect CC just for the experience and knowledge and start fresh at another CC? I have no past credits with my current CC so I’d only be losing a semester which could be semi-made up over winter session and summer. Anyone know if this’ll work?

What do you guys think? I know these might sound like stupid Q’s in general but I’m new to the system - and stupid.

“…if I do complete CC with all A’s (very feasible)”
yea we saw evidence of that w/ your geology class. Someone who has it together as much as you think you do would have withdrew from the class in the first place, let alone a class that a ‘close bud’ taught. Start looking at some realistic choices.

I didn’t withdraw because of my own stupidity and bad advice from peers. The only reason I failed in the first place was because of my situation at home with family. I thankfully don’t have any more similar issues.

Every single classmate told me redoing an F would be better than having a W - I know I WAS STUPID to not follow up on this. I admit that - I was a reckless HS kid with problems at home and I didn’t bother putting any effort into school.

I realize what I did was wrong but getting all A’s IS very feasible. I currently am taking 5 classes with 15 units total and have above 95% in all of them (including the retaken geo.) and over 100% in two and I have changed my lifestyle to keep my grades up.

People change and I have my goals but I’m looking for advice to the scenario I set up.

I don’t think much changes through one AR or one W but I can be wrong - that’s why I’m here for advice and telling me to start looking at realistic choices might make sense if I was screwing up my whole CC life but I know I can pull through a 3.8-4.0 GPA with my current mindset.

So any more true advice would be helpful - thanks

journeyman - Let us know what you find out when you speak to the Registrar.

As to
This comes up a lot. I’m not quite sure what you have in mind. You cannot “erase” past coursework at any college. All transfer applications require you to list every college you have ever attended. You cannot leave any out even if you don’t care about the credits.

Somehow, you will make this work. If you do well in every course beyond the one F (where you later get an A). If you have good recommendations. You will have a successful transfer.

I cannot say that it will be to USC. It might or it might not. Make sure that you apply to schools in a range of selectivities. Do not fixate on any one school. Do not fixate on a level of school which is uber-selective. You certainly may end up at one. But there are many other excellent choices.

Thanks for the straightforward response Andale.

Yeah I pretty much wanted to go to another CC and start fresh since it would set me back only a sem. but I have not looked up on that at all. So you’re saying I have to submit every college I went to? Are these types of things tied into my SSN? What happens if I don’t report my one semester at a certain school to USC? Consiquences?

Edit: Just read some info online about listing colleges. Most say as long as you don’t care about your credits then you can skip listing a college but if you are getting financial aid from a college and you want to get aid from your transfer univ. too then it all gets tied into your SSN and they can see which colleges you received financial aid from in the past. This is all random people’s info online and on yahoo answers so I don’t know how valid it is. What do you guys think? I’ll ask my counselor too and do a search here also.

These are probably all lame Q’s but I’m willing to do whatever it takes to clean my slate which is probably not possible now.

I’m going to call up my transfer center tom. and see what they say in regards to the Spring 08 grades being included in my transcript and I’ll be sure to post their response and any other follow up questions I might have.

No you don’t understand if you don’t list a school that you previously attended you put yourself at great risk at Berkeley and USC, even if you do get in, if they ever find out within your undergraduate career that you purposely didn’t list one of the CC’s you attended they can revoke your admission and expel you from their institution. Many people think they can get away with it, and honestly some people do get away with it, but you don’t want to be the one that ends up being kicked out and left with no college degree and stories of that are told on this website frequently. It happens more than you think, and I think you need to set your priorities straight if you really want to just leave your F in geology out because it technically is cheating.

You are making this 4.0 at a community college seem like a big deal, I know you are motivated you repeated that multiple times, but everyone that is admitted to Berkeley or USC could get a 4.0 at a community college without even trying, that’s something that you should expect yourself to be able to do before applying to top schools like USC and Berkeley. YOU SHOULD BE getting a 4.0 at a CC because it’s EASY. Don’t make it out to be some impossible feat that you need to try really hard to accomplish that takes 100% motivation, because if it takes that much out of you to get a 4.0 at a CC you won’t last at USC or Berkeley.

ramennoodles08 is correct. There are consequences. While one cannot be sure that omitting a school from you application will be “found out,” there is a good chance it will be. DO NOT LISTEN TO THOSE WHO SAY IT WILL ONLY BE FOUND OUT IF YOU SEEK FINANCIAL AID. If you are found to have omitted such information from your application (or falsified it in any other way)… first, your admission can be rescinded; second, you can be removed from the school if it is found out after you have matriculated; third, you can have your degree rescinded if it is found out even after you have graduated.

Don’t go there. One F on your transcript will not derail your transfer chances. Do your best and get the best GPA you can. Tell your story on your application. If that one F is an outlier on your application, it will not prevent you from a successful college transfer experience. Although I can’t know your exact GPA, let’s take an example of one F and 7 A’s in year one at cc; 8 A’s in year two: this would yield a GPA of 3.75… an excellent GPA. You can get advice later whether to “explain” the F in one of your essays, or whether to just let the excellent GPA speak for itself.

OTOH, lying on your application can derail your admissions, your college career or your post college career.

If the F comes from a prof who later gave you an A… this prof can be one of your recommenders. That alone will go a long way to taking any import from the grade.

I know a 4.0 at a CC is not difficult and that’s why I feel like crap because this one F is going to taint my GPA so much even and follow me when I want to apply to a grad school in the future. I feel horrible that I let myself get into this situation.

Yeah they pretty much said it’s going to be counted in your GPA for USC regardless.

I called up USC admissions office and they said as long as I get A’s afterwords and provide an explanation for your F in the class in the short answer section you should be fine and the admission officers will see my upward trend and etc…

I know it’s very hypothetical but how much will USC consider my F followed by all A’s? My GPA is still my GPA but they see each class grade individually so will it be a big factor or not so big once they see my other grades? - anyone?

I have one last hope which is a LATE WITHDRAWAL PETITION with a documented reason for my withdrawal, which will be hard to come up with considering there are no papers proving my dads alcoholism effecting my academic performance - anyone with experience in late withdrawals and possible explanations?

I tried to address this in the USC Transfers thread. They like to see an upward trend, so yes they will look at each class individually. USC does not have a cut-off GPA point. My USC transfer couselor told me that someone got accepted in 2007 with a 2.8. In case you haven’t already guessed, this person had several subpar grades that were followed by a strong upward trend of all As.

If you want to try the Late Withdrawal Petition, go ahead. But don’t devote too much more energy to this. You have moved past it. Let it go if you don’t get the W. Follow the advice the admissions officer gave you. Focus on the future. You’ll be fine.
