Right now my schedule for senior year is... (we do block schedule like A and B days, also calculus BC is two periods so there is period A and period B)

1A-Student Government (I'm an SBO)
2A-AP Environmental Science
3A-Auto Mechanics
4A-AP CALC BC(A)
1B-AP Government
2B-AP CALC BC(B)
3B-Film Making (needed art cred)
4B-AP English Lit

Here is the problem I absolutely hate english with a passion. I was able to pull A's all last year in Junior English Honors (can't take AP Eng till senior year) it but i hated how much time i had to commit to it and wanna concentrate a lot on SBO and other things this year and have fun.

So I was thinking of maybe dropping AP English Lit for AP Stats (i'm good at math, 800 SAT II Math Lvl1&2) so i could enjoy senior year a little more but still have an AP class to replace it. If I did that i would then drop auto mechanics and just take regular english and cruise through that.

Would that be a dumb idea? Like would it make a difference to colleges really or anything?

lit at my school was so dumb. i had around a 50%, and i was scared of getting an F and being rescinded. i was planning on emailing her, but then i just though nahhhh and i ended up getting an A...she graded based on how well she liked you. plus there was never any real hw and we watched movies every class. when he had to read, sparknotes was usually enough to be knowledgeable in discussions.

that being said, i would recommend taking 4 years of english. i seem to remember that if a college/program had any course requirements at all, 4 years of english was always one of them. its just a good idea IMO to take 4 years of math/english/science/history + some years of a language.

take lit. 4 years of language is really preferred in college admissions. you already have 4 years of math with calc. and stats wouldn't make it 5. english is important. suck it up. its your last year. and take english.

I'd recommend taking stats for two reasons. First, it would make your overall transcript more impressive in my opinion. AP Stats + regular english > auto mechanics + AP Lit. Second, most top schools I know of don't let you place out of their English and writing requirements with AP credit. On the other hand, they usually will give you credit for AP Stats.

I'd take AP lit if I were you. English is a really important subject, in my high school it was the only subject required all four years. I think top schools want their students to be well-read and well-spoken, and prioritize that; afterall the skills to speak and write are necessary in any disciple. On a more practical note, you're going to have to take freshman writing seminars at cornell, besides the fact that this demonstrates how much the school cares about writing, if you take AP Lit and get a 4 or 5 on the test, you can test out of one of the writing seminars. Also, you'll want the experience writing, it'll be tough doing all those college papers when you haven't had practice in 2 years.

I took AP lit and it was one of the easiest classes I took. I absolutely loved it, we watched movies and read some good books and we didn't even have to do all that much writing.

What are the graduation requirements for your school? I've never heard of one that will graduate a student with less than 4 credits of English.

Even if you're allowed to have less than 4, stick with Lit. 4 credits is what most colleges want. Sorry.

Your plan to apply to highly selective schools (other thread) dictates Lit over college prep english. The private colleges on your list are writing-intensive. Drop autoshop to free up some time.

btw: Yes, UC finaid is extremely poor for OOS.)

if i dropped lit i would just take regular english in place of auto mech. another reason i would do this is i think for sure i could get a 4 or a 5 on stats but for english im a little more unsure and would probably get a 3. also i heard (not sure if its true) that a lot of highly selective colleges wont let you get out of english with an AP credit and require you to take it anyway.

but to bluebayou:

so you're saying that i would be better off taking ap lit correct? auto was just for fun.

ughh so much work. we're supposed to read Crime and Punishment & how to read literature like a professor for summer reading and i havent started ha. school starts in like two weeks

chaserz, I'm kinda leaning towards AP Stats.

This is why: Last year, one week before school, my counselor informed me that I could only take two of following: AP Physics B, AP Calc AB, and AP Eng Lang. I chose AP Physics and AP Calc b/c English would take up most time and happiness. Right before AP tests, I decided to try AP English Language test anyway. I got a 4. That was amazing considering, 1) I studied for a total of 3 hours max, and 2) I bought the AP Eng Lit book anyway (studying from wrong book). So, I pretty much BSed terms and essay on Regular Eng 11 education and still pulled off a 4. Think of all the good times I had Junior Year w/o AP Eng thanks to AP Physics instead. I plan on doing same for Junior yr as well but actually studying.

Take whichever you find more fun, it's your senior year! AP English is not a requirement to get into top colleges. As long as you're taking regular English you'll be fine. However, as a math/science person who took both classes I'd say AP English Lit was way more fun than Stat though I only got a 4 on Lit and a 5 on Stat. My English class was pretty similar to helenrez's experience and my Stats experience was one of loads of homework-YMMV depending on the teachers of both courses. And about AP Credit, I don't think (but I may be wrong) that many schools give credit for either course so it shouldn't be a huge issue.
