hi everybody.!
my name is karthikeyan and am a student living in india in chennai. i study in,if not the best, one of the best schools in the country.i am in grade 11 in c.sc in science stream. our system of education is completely different and does not have gpa and all that.
i have consistently done well in school, and have given the may 6 sat. i have done well am expecting pretty good scores.about 750-800 in reading and writing and a definite 800 on math.
i have a long list of extra curricualrs like debates and quizzes . i have made quite a few power point presentations .i have even organised quite a few quizzes.
i have been selected to represent my country at the world school forum this year in australia . will this help?
i want to do computer engineering. i have been coming in the top 5% of my class in computer science regularly.unfortunately i do not have any social service experience with me. what do you think i should do?
and yeah by the way i have done well on the toefl too. expecting 260+
i play cricket(of course),tennis,volleyball(school team for 3 years)
i have won the gold medal for being the all round student for 4 years in a row and last year i won the cash award for outstanding morals and values.i did very well on my public exams too.we in our system do not have options to take the courses we want.it is a fixed curriculum. our standard is much higher
and advanced calculus is mandataory and compulsory. i can tell you that our standard is much higher than those in your country. the sat math is in fact 9th grade level in our country. do you thnk mit will reognise all thsi?

WHAT ARE MY CHANCES A T MIT,cornell,carniegie,brown,caltech

seems like you are a typical applicant applying to MIT, and I do not mean a typical acceptee. Many of the applicants applying to MIT are competitive and they come from very goal driven backgrounds with substantial education from top secondary schools.

If I could list them in the order of difficulty...of getting in:

thanks a lot for replying. nobody seems to reply. what are the institutions you have in mind ? name some which you feel will be a cakewalk for me
i am desperate

why don't you go to IIT Chennai? you are certainly qualified for it. Go there for 4 years, and then go to MIT or Carnegie for Grad School. IIT majors salary in Silicon Valley [where I live] > MIT salary.

if you don't get into IIT, then go for Carnegie Mellon as a good chance of getting in, and Cornell and Brown being decent chances.

MIT is a weird case, because many US students have you qualifications as well. But I don't know about representing your country in Australia and what not. It might mean a a whole lot more than you make it out to be.

Apply to the above institutions. You never want to regret not applying to the schools you really wanted.

U. of Illinois - Urbana Champaign

Case Western Reserve Univ.

Georgia Inst. of Tech.

Rensseler Polytechnic Univ.

Univ. of Mich - Ann Arbor

Purdue Univ.

or
1. Stanford Univ.
2. UC-Berkeley

there are many options...

I would say, choose lots of reach school so that you never regret not applying...even 0.0001% counts. and mix with a few match and safety.

Isint Getting Ito Iit A Whole Lot Tougher. It Requires A Super Extraordinary Brain To Solve Some Of The Problems They Pose In Thier Entrance Examination. It Is Considered To Be The Toughest Exam In The World At This Level. 5 Lakh People Apply With 35000 Getting In ,worse If You Are A Forward Caste Student You Have To Rough It Out. There Is A Quota For Backward Classes . Thats Why I Am Looking Away From These Universities. Though I Am Going To Write The Exam . The Best Apart From Iits Are The Univs Mentioned In The Thread.
Any Way Thanks A Lot For Giving The Thought .
I Sincerely Would Like To Agrree Woth You , But Obviously Circumstances Do Not Permit Me.
