@rickie1 I was a teacher in CA for some time and you are very right about teachers getting compensated in other ways than salaries. Teachers get pensions that are guaranteed, defined benefits. And that is worth a lot! CA has a website called transparent california and you can see any teacher’s pension. I have former co-workers who are receiving 80k+ a year for life, with COL increases to boot. They seriously could pull over $2 million in pension total which is way more than the average 401k. And you are right about the job security too. Knowing you have a job and getting a solid break in the summer is a rarity outside of education. While my husband makes considerably more than a teacher, the volatility of his industry has resulted in many company mergers and layoffs. The stress of unemployment is real. I know teacher compensation varies greatly from state to state, but it still is true that teachers get benefits that go beyond the salary.
