A few schools require you to input your grades from your transcript into the Common App. You see a spot for grades 9-11. What if you earned high school credit during 8th grade in a different school system? Do you add that class to 9th? Or do you have to go in and add that school as a previously attended school? It seems like that would be overkill for just one class.
My D did not report any classed from middle school. The only exception was her GC made mention of her middle school FL in his LOR because it was very atypical for the school and she skipped ahead (this was important because she couldn’t get to Spanish IV because of a scheduling conflict).
First check with the GC. It’s been a couple of application cycles since certain schools (thankfully very few) have asked for courses/grades prior to 12th to be listed on the Common App. So it’s unlikely that you’re the first person at the school to ask the question.
My recommendation would be to list under 9th for the HS attended in 9th, since it’s likely that the 8th grade school is not populated in the Common App. But check with the GC.
I should clarify. The 8th grade class is a math class that goes toward her HS GPA. Since it’s a core class, I assume it is relevant.
Talk to your GC. My D took three high school courses in 8th grade but they weren’t on her HS transcript and wasn’t counted in her GPA. The GC said it would be obvious since she started in a higher level courses as a 9th grades.
The colleges are looking for courses taken during the hs years. Sure, the high school may accept an 8th grade class for hs credit, but that’s their policy for their grad requirements.
It’s rare that some middle school course is so important that you have to “force” it into high school records. Maybe some kids take AP calc or an AP sci, for whatever reason, maybe they’re that advanced. If you’re that worried and feel it’s that important a class, you can write a line or two in Addl Info. Don’t misrepresent this as a 9th grade course, if it wasn’t.
Further thoughts: My concern is that the math class is on the HS transcript, transferred from the previous middle school, and counts toward the HS GPA. No clue why. But it is. So if the school requires us to input the high school grades on the app, as some schools like Purdue and Arizona State do, then if we do not enter the class grade will it adversely affect the school’s core GPA calculation?
The safe bet would be to be consistent with the official HS transcript and the GC report. This is something you need to discuss with your GC as to how he/she will handle this.
I’m wondering the same thing. S20 has classes from middle school that are listed on his high school transcript. Algebra 1 and Spanish 1. I guess he’ll have to contact his guidance counselor.
