Reports about U Montana-Davidson Honors College

My son was admitted OOS to the Davidson Honors College. He applied to Univ of Montana because he loved the location. Any input for current students about the Davidson program?

This reply might be too late, but the Davidson Honors College is incredible. I recently graduated and can honestly say that I feel like I received a better education, more opportunities, and better advising than my friends at Harvard and Princeton. The Davidson Honors College produces the most Udall scholars in the country and is one of the hardest honors colleges to get into. The standards for incoming students are pretty high and you have to do a lot to stay in the program. It’s definitely worth the time and was one of the best parts about my time at the University of Montana.

Thanks for the info crew007. We are from CA and my son is applying to U of Montana and the Honors program. I can see you liked the Honors program…how about your overall experience at the school? Did you have opportunities for internships that helped after graduation?

Thanks.

rhumbob-we are also from Ca and my D is considering University of Montana. She already has been admitted to the college and was advised to apply to the honors program. She will do so.
Have you already visited Missoula?

My S is a junior in HS and will apply next year so I am wondering about Montana’s merit aid. Montana State has their automatic OOS scholarships listed on their website…29-32 ACT gets you $7500 in merit aid. U Montana does not have any automatic merit aid. Have you folks found the amounts from U Montana to be similar to MSU for similar scores?

Hey mom60 - no trips yet. Waiting for acceptances before scheduling the next road trip.

The town of Missoula, the Honors College, and the Mansfield Center make this school very interesting to my son. He is unclear about any opportunities available through the Mansfield Center so that is another piece of the puzzle for him to investigate.

Haystack- to aid yet from Univ of Montana. The acceptance came in about 10 days after she applied. From the website it looks like they start sending merit aid amounts in mid November. We are hoping D gets the WUE scholarship.
My D thinks she wants a rural school but she also wants a liberal school. She would love to get one of the Honor’s College scholarships with the stipend. She says she would use the stipend to bring her horse to Montana.
We have not visited any schools yet. H did not want to visit without an acceptance. For Montana if they don’t go soon they will need to wait till spring. I figure spring might be busy with visiting other schools with later notification dates.

My son is in his 3rd year @ UM in the DHC program. It is an excellent program providing students with good advising and lots of opportunities to challenge themselves and be challenged. At another school we visited in Montana, the advisor mentioned that UM has some of the top professors in the country. Professors who could teach anywhere choose UM on account of enjoying living in Missoula.
We are from Montana so we were familiar with Missoula and UM but I strongly recommend it and the DHC program. If you have any specific questions, I could pass them on to my son. I could even arrange for a tour and meeting with him if you were interested. While he isn’t part of the official ambassadors program, he really enjoys meeting people from all over the country and I know he would be willing to answer any questions you might have.

My daughter just finished her 1st semester at UofM Davidson. She applied to Wesleyan and was waitlisted, but didn’t get in. She is a National Merit scholar, so she got some good scholarships which pretty much paid for her first year tuition, room and board. We have found from other Davidson students, that there are lots of merit scholarships available, especially after freshman year. Keep in mind that Montana is (right now) one of two U.S. states (other than N. Dakota) that is actually not floating in red ink due to the economy, and has extra money to spend on higher education and scholarships.

We have found that there are many excellent programs at the school (our daughter is into fine arts, writing, drama), including law, forestry, business. If you do get into the honors program, honors students get 1st choice for many of the better classes, and there is lots of variety (ranging from the arts to the sciences) to choose from. For example, our daughter enrolled in Arabic, a special program recently started at UofM, and is also taking modern dance, and drawing. We think it was a better choice for her than Wesleyan, at least for her first year or two, as it is giving her a chance to dabble into some areas of interest without feeling the pressure of an ivy league tier school (and at a price we can afford). All in all, we have been quite pleased with our choice.

I just got this e-mailed to me after I posted, this may be useful for some of you thinking about UofM DHC. Let me know if you have any other questions

I applied to the DHC a little over a week ago after getting into UM in October with the WUE Scholarship. Does it have rolling admission/when will i hear back?

As far as I know UofM DHC does not have a “rolling admissions” policy. You should hear back fairly soon, at the latest by the beginning of Spring Semester 2012, on Jan 21. I would contact their admissions office directly for questions about this to be absolutely sure, though.
