PS: We had the raw oysters at Superior Seafood and they were really good.

If one is an oyster fan, do yourself a favor and experience the charbroiled oysters at Drago’s.

There is also a Drago’s in the Hilton Riverside by the convention center.

And everyone is correct, the charbroiled oysters there are amazing. Even my wife, who normally is not a huge oyster fan, loved them.

Everyone has covered this topic and I’m a little late to the game, but I’ll post a bit about our visit.

When: Last August–yes, in the heat of summer, but it was delightfully comfortable!

Stayed at: Embassy Suites–I thought at the time that my DH and my son’s friend might accompany us, alas not so. The room was certainly big enough, probably too big for our needs. We liked it OK, but the trolley wasn’t running and that was a bit of a disappointment. Parking cost was outrageous, even if expected.

Ate at: Mother’s. If you haven’t been to Mother’s, it is an institution and one of our favorites for good ol’ greasy spoon soul food. If you are not into greens, cornbread, and the other soul food favorites, probably not the place to go. We were on a budget, and Mother’s gives you substantial servings for a reasonable price. Plus it was walking distance from our hotel.

We also ate at our hotel, which was surprisingly good. Honestly, I’ve been to NOLA many times now and I’ve yet to eat I meal I didn’t like. Maybe that’s luck, but I do think that word about “bad” restaurants gets out pretty quickly and they just don’t last long. We also ate somewhere near Tulane, and darnit, I cannot remember the name of the place. It was just a salad and soup of the day, but it was very, very, good.

Visited: We strolled leisurely through Audobon Park right after our morning tour. It is one of my son’s favorite places. I remember him turning to me and saying, “I could be very happy here,” and I knew he was right. We had a great presentation by Morgan England right before we split off for tours of campus with our cute student guide, who was pre-med. We also met briefly with Andrew Fairis b.c. at the time my DS was very interested in theatre.

We crammed a visit to Loyola and Univ of New Orleans into that brief two-day trip. We live under six hours from NOLA, so we have already taken in much of the sights, smells and sounds on previous visits and I agree with much of what others have written about great places to eat and visit. It truly is a one-of-a-kind town.

Having said that, DS knows that unless a miracle happens, Tulane is a huge financial reach for us and we are very hesitant to go into massive debt, even for a school as fine as Tulane. We are waiting to see about our aid package and some scholarships out there before making a final decision. Plus, DS has elected to take a Gap Year anyway, so wherever he ends up, it won’t be until Fall 2014.

If money were no object, I would probably have put my deposit down already. ;)

That’s my summary!

Nice article about Uptown resident Archie Manning in the Sunday NY Times.

He mentions several of my fave Nola eats – Dragos grilled oysters, Manale’s bbq shrimp and Domilise’s po boys (still on my bucket list).

<a href=“Super Bowl — Archie Manning Is the ‘First Citizen’ of New Orleans - The New York Times”>Super Bowl — Archie Manning Is the ‘First Citizen’ of New Orleans - The New York Times;

In town for the Superbowl. Going to visit on Friday.

Taking my daughter to see Tulane in March. I guess I waited too long to make hotel reservations because the Hampton Inn Garden District is completely sold out for March 22nd when we hoped to go.

Can anyone make a suggestion of another moderately priced hotel? The Tulane website offers some suggestions but I’d rather not book blind because I want to make sure we are in a decent location. Also, no B & B’s, my husband is not a fan.

THANK YOU

jaynebe, I did the same thing the first time I visited. I think you can still get rooms at the Best Western St Charles and it has free parking and a small free breakfast. There are some nice restaurants within walking distance and it is right on the streetcar line. If it is a busy weekend the hotel prices will run higher.

Am I the only one here who uses Priceline to get hotels for these visits? We used it to schedule our visit that is coming up in a few weeks and did the “Express deals” and got a great room at a really famous hotel for under $70 a night. We have done even better in other cities. It takes a little research and a little time, but we have had tons of fun and lots of great experiences by using Priceline!

gowill. thanks for the best western suggestion. just checked aand they do indeed still have rooms available.

Oh good. The St Charles location is right next to the Hampton, so a good location. Have a wonderful trip!

As a New Orleans resident, I can tell you a few great places to attend while in the area. One of my favorite places to go to is the New Orleans Museum of Art. Its sculpture garden is a great place to take a stroll and admire the art. Also, downtown NOLA has a ton of great shops and restaurants around Jackson Square and Jax Brewery. Magazine Street is also awesome, and visiting the Audubon Zoo and the Riverwalk are also great adventures. Hope everyone has a great time in New Orleans!

Any hotel recommendations?
I’m planning a visit for Destination Tulane. The Hampton on St. Charles is booked solid. We’d like to avoid paying more than $230ish a night. Also, staying on St. Charles or close to campus would be preferable. We stayed in the quarter last time and it was a bit of a hassle. Thank you!

There’s a Best Western next to Hampton Inn.

Thanks Vitrac!

Does anyone know other hotels that offer the Tulane discount?

Other reasonable Charles St hotels are the Indigo and the Avenue Plaza Resort Hotel. The Avenue Plaza has a great inner courtyard and outdoor pool, and rooms run about $180.

I got a great deal by calling the Best Western on St. Charles. They gave a special Tulane rate, $149 during French Quarter Fest! I’m very pleased!

Also, the street car runs right in front of the hotel. Although talked to my D tonight and the section up by Tulane is undergoing repairs, so I guess you either have to transfer to a bus or walk the rest of the way (I am guessing on the bus part, she didn’t say because she walked).

Recently busses were running the whole length of St Charles for some trips and streetcar/transfer to busses for other trips. Either way, it was no big deal.

The Park View B&B right across the street from Tulane offers a 10% discount.
