Orientation: June 12 - 15
Got a killer rate at the JW Marriott from Priceline! $75/night

Move-In: August 23 - 26
My sister just surprised me by booking our room at the Ritz! She gets an insane corporate rate of $125/night! I’ve never stayed at a Ritz and this Hampton Inn girl from Maine is very excited. :-)

I have had colleagues that stayed at the JW during conventions and said it was very nice, but people on here that have stayed at the Ritz say it is fabulous! That should be fun for you.

<a href=“Tulane Student Guide to Food and Fun near Campus - Google My Maps”>Tulane Student Guide to Food and Fun near Campus - Google My Maps;
So I was a little intrigued by this idea of creating a map, and turns out, it’s pretty easy to do, thanks to Google. This list is by no means a complete list, but it should keep your new Tulanians busy for a while. It will give you an idea of just how many places are clustered right off campus and many more just a few blocks away. If there are any blatant omissions, feel free to PM me and I will edit. Obviously, this was thrown together in a flash. I tried to keep this to student-type establishments, but might have drifted a bit across the line here and there. Hope this helps!

Note: I added the Nola Bucks locations to the map as listed on the Tulane website with the exception of the Taco Truck!

Well I am sure that I left a few places off and I didn’t really get down Magazine too much because at least my son tends to stay in that quadrant bordered by Carrollton/Claiborne/Napoleon/St.Charles with a few exceptions, so that is what I am most familiar with as far as students go. You could do a completely different map for “grown-ups!” Maybe another day…

One more thing: This wasn’t obvious to me at first, but you can click on the little person (yellow figure) that sits on top of the zoom feature and see the actual street view of each location.

Vitrac: you may have some additions - maybe girls frequent some different places than boys???

Kat-is there a way of denoting on the map or on the key which of these establishments accept NOLA Bucks? Is it there already and I don’t see it?

good job kreativekat…wish i had had this the first time we visited. when we left after our campus tour, we asked the cab driver to drop us off at a fun, cool place on magazine street where kids hang out. he dropped us at some random bar with nothing at all around it. we ended up calling another cab and leaving. as we drove down magazine street in cab #2, we saw where we should have gone, but by then, we were done and just went back to our hotel.

Thanks and you’re welcome mofthree! It’s actually been a fun project!

For those trying to figure out how to make the map useful for yourself or your student on the go, this is what I suggest:
Bookmark the link to the map and open it in Safari on your smart phone. Then you can pull down the list of locations marked on the map from the icon at the top (second box from the right on my iphone) and click on a particular location. It will open up the link in google to the selected location and there you can “get directions.” That is the best approach I have found so far. I had trouble trying to use it with the Google maps app for iphone. It seems to let you save individual places but not an entire map. If someone is more technologically adept and has another suggestion, please share with the rest of us.

Had a terrific visit to Tulane today - I think it has rocketed to first on my D’s list.

We started with the info session & tour, which were nice but it was HOT and the tour was long. We were feeling wilted and a bit cranky at the end. Then we met with Andrew, the Arts admissions coordinator, and progressively got more and more excited as he showed us the music and theater facilities and let us peek into a couple of rehearsals and just gave us a thorough picture of the music program. He spent about an hour and a half with us and was a ton of fun to chat with. D really liked the smaller size of Tulane vs., say, the University of Alabama. Seems like a terrific fit for her!
