Repost: Why I chose Yale over Harvard

I was somewhat convinced by it....it's a very informative post...

Marite, I always think it's funny when people worry about lecture classes. I know some of my favorite classes at Harvard were lecture classes - especially the Greek Lit class with the legendary John Finley. I also had many small classes where the professor knew everyone in class by name.

caramelkisses06,

When you were there, which schools (2 or 3) were the most talk about at Harvard? especially the schools people want to go for graduate schools after Harvard? Thanks.

ewho,
In terms of what graduate schools people wanted to go to, that actually didn't get talked about a whole lot. Mostly you'd just hear about it senior year, once folks were accepted and had decided where to go. Naturally, people ended up at some pretty good graduate programs, like Yale, Georgetown, Harvard, UPenn, and Columbia for law school, Columbia, UChicago, and Mt. Sinai medical schools, and lots of people at Harvard Business School. I'm sure plenty of folks went to other schools, but these are just the ones that immediately sprang to mind. But I really want to reiterate, I don't recall ever hearing anyone talking about what graduate schools they wanted to go to until there was a decision to be made, or they had already chosen.

In what other sense (besides graduate programs) did you want to know what schools are talked about? It seemed at the beginning of your post that you meant something else, but I wasn't sure what.

Thanks. In an indirect way, you actually answered my question. Many people try to compare Harvard with other schools, like this thread did. I want to know which schools come out most of the times when you talked to your schoolmates there, or you heard the most. I believe Yale is one of them for sure.

People there don't really compare it with other schools in any serious way. Things like, "I think Harvard is better than Yale because of XYZ," or "Princeton is awesome and I hate it here because XYZ," are not conversations you'd hear at the college. People at Harvard, as at most schools, aren't concerned with other colleges because we've already chosen one. No need to keep comparing.

So if other schools come up, it's usually regarding graduate school, or (more likely) in jest, as in: "Ugh, I should've gone to Stanford!" on a freezing cold, snowy day, or, "Wow, it must be tough worrying about getting shot on your own campus, no wonder Yalies are so lame," on Harvard-Yale weekend.

That is what I meant: in a very causal way the names showed up -- Yale and Stanford. One of my students who went to Harvard told me this once. He was cross-admitted by Harvard and Yale, and many times tried to convince that he made the right choice.
