Reputation and other things

I am a current high school student seeing if anyone can tell me about SDSU. I've heard that a degree from SDSU is worthless, is this true? How is their journalism program? Overall how good of a school is it? Do they actually have as bad of a reputation as so many say?

Yes SDSU is a horrible school with a horrible reputation. That’s why these people are alumni:

-The current Chief Financial Officer for SpaceX, the first public company to achieve space flight
-Founder of Jack in the Box
-Founder of Rubio’s
-First Latina astronaut

SDSU is a good school and fuels the SD economy with many grads.

Thank you for giving me some clarity! I’ve heard so many mixed things about SDSU. I think the people that trash on it are just haters from UCSD. SDSU is a school I’m thinking about applying to, I live in Arizona. I never actually believed the bad things that people said because they never had even been to SDSU, they were just saying things that they had heard from others.

SDSU is a party school but it is what you make it. It prepares you for the real world, has research opportunities, and can get you into more prestigious grad schools. It’s all based on the student.

I think SDSUs reputation lingers from decades ago. In the olden days (the yrs when us parents were going to school) it was very easy to get into SDSU and students who just wanted to surf or party went there. Things have changed a lot in the last 5-10 yrs. SDSU is very hard to get into if you are applying from outside the region. It has one of the highest nbr of applications in the world, over 75,000 apps last Fall. Because of impact and limited space many 4.0 students were denied admittance.

This influx of higher qualified students is coupled with a concentrated effort to improve academic excellence by the administration. The academic quality of SDSU is amazing now. Students who are accepted are very lucky. However, it is the same as any large school, wonderful opportunities, great support for all types of students, research facilities, sports teams, etc. On the other hand there is a drinking and partying culture and general San Diego beach vibe, although the school is actually located pretty far from the beach.

The problem is that it is going to take a little longer for the reputation to turn around. Most parents, and others who aren’t specifically researching colleges right now just know it as the surfer party school. If you can get past what others think (because of their outdated knowledge) then you should seriously consider SDSU.
