Reputation for Engineering

Just in terms of reputation alone (from the perpective of industry, academica, etc), how do these schools stand, especially when compared to MIT or Stanford? Harvard, Yale, Princeton, Cornell, Penn, Michigan, Georgia Tech, Caltech, etc. I know USNEWS has rankings, but do those rankings really indicate reputation? Also, obviously Yale and Harvard are not ranked very high for engineering, but does it matter when it comes to getting jobs?

This has been asked alot in previous threads lately. Do a quick search.

Bioengineering and Chem E at Penn are very strong. Cornell and Princeton are strong in engineering. Caltech is very good overall. Not too sure about the others.... Obviously Stanford or MIT will give you better leverage than Harvard or Yale if you want an engineering job. Of course it matters.

They're all pretty much trash next to UCLA.

I think Caltech at least is a pretty good engineering school. I think their program has a much better reputation than UCLA. I wouldn't go as far as saying that they are trash.

I think ghettonomics' response was more or less "ask a stupid question, get a stupid answer". As blah2009 stated there are many threads on this subject.

That's exactly what the US News rankings measure.

I was 100% serious and 0% joking. As far as employers are concerned all universities other than UCLA are absolute trash. CalTech? Pffy, where is that? Calcutta? No one cares.

Go to UCLA, if you don't you're pretty much a huge failure in the eyes of not only society but your family as well. UCLA is the ONLY school that will prepare you for the rigors of Engineering. It is also the best university in the world.

Also, it has the best looking women of any University out there. That in of itself is like +1000 points (we are on a 7-point modified tally system if you are keeping track).

now here is a man with true insight... go to UCLA... screw MIT.

Affirmative. Honk!

I know MIT/CalTech sound like the ultimate geek/nerd/engineer/science school and they're prestigious. Is it really better to go to UCLA than MIT/CalTech for engineering?
USNews rates MIT and CalTech and UCBerkeley better than UCLA but is that just prestige or the kind of education you receive?

Obviously Caltech/MIT is better than UCLA in terms of engineering... It was just pure sarcasm.
