Hi everyone,
I realize that NYU has a reputation for having the best applied math program in the country...
but how is their pure math program ?
Any thoughts?

Thanks

nyu is good at anything math related. We have a whole tall building committed purely to math.

I don't know how we have the best math program... I've never had one decent math teacher - they all have foreign accents that render them incomprehensible.

I originally came to NYU as a math major. after two semesters (Calc II last semester with a pretty good prof, and Calc III this semester with a TERRIBLE prof), I decided to change my major to chemistry. The way NYU teaches math (although I have no comparison to any other colleges) is just... i dunno i guess not as interesting? I dread calc 3 right now, i basically stopped going to lecture because I learn the material better teaching myself and going to the college learning center.

supposively the upper level profs get better, but I don't think I'll last that long in math to see.

haha that sounds about right... which chem are you in? need tutoring? (i got an A in whatever you're taking)

Pure math is only so-so at NYU, I think. Still probably top 10, but it's definitely overshadowed by applied math.

Also, I'm pretty sure the conflicting info people are posting is because the rankings are only based on the graduate school. Undergrad math at NYU is really nothing special in my experience, aside from the likelihood that a student would obviously have access to more renowned professors and so on versus some other schools. I'm only a math minor though! Perhaps the upper level classes are better.
