CMU wants all interviews done by Feb. 1st so that means I only have fifteen days or so to schedule one AND meet up w/ the alumni..

is fifteen days enough to call, schedule and etc.? or does it seem like I'm a lazy kid who procrastinated? lol, I was debating on whether to interview or not because I want to show more interest but I'm not sure if I can pull of a great interview (it would be my first one.. )

so if I call the admissions office tomorrow morning and get the contact info of my interviewer, and then call her to schedule a meeting.. USUALLY are interviews scheduled within a couple of days?

also, do interviews have a huge effect, specifically how is it for cmu? I think I'll probably be in the maybe pile, and I want to bump this up w/ a good interview.. so any additional tips? :)

oh yeah. and when I call the interviewer.. I don't want to sound awkward, how would you start off the convo? just say "Hi my name is ____ and I wanted to see if you were available for a cmu interview" ??

Well, im GUESSING once you contact CMU for an alumni interview, THEY inform your interveiwer and then he contacts you to set up a suitable time. Not sure though.

I don’t think it would be that bad. I scheduled my interview 4 days after i turned in my application for EDII, (participated in No Shave November so didn’t want to show up with a full beard lol). But the way it works is you go on the site here: https://webapp.as.cmu.edu/cmac/index.html find an interviewer near where you are at and call Admissions saying you want an interview with a specific interviewer. Admissions will then give you their email/phone number so you can call/email them to set up an interview. Admissions does not schedule interviews for you. Although if you have you admission ID you can directly access numbers/emails of interviews and just bypass admissions altogether.

Also my interviewer said the main thing with alumni interviews is for the applicant to ask questions about CMU. So definitely have a list of questions prepared that you want to ask about. They will definitely ask why CMU also.

We live near Pittsburgh, but for whatever reason, DS (currently soph) never did have an alum interview for CMU. He applied and got in RD, so perhaps it doesn’t matter that much, so if you can’t pull it off, don’t lose any sleep over it.

nightvisitor – I got my applicant ID for CMU just yesterday in mail. How do I bypass the calling admission office part and directly obtain the alumna’s contact info?

On that page right next to the alumni look up enter you id and info and then log in. Once you do the page should refresh and the log in thing should have disappeared. After that enter your search criteria and find your alumna. A list should pop up below with emails/numbers of alumni, year they graduated+college, city and name. Most of the alumni don’t list numbers by the way.

I got contact info of an aluma from the website and asked for an interview. We had a chat last week, but it was so chilled out, I’m not sure if she even considered it an interview and sent anything to the admissions office. ? Still, it was really great to talk about the CFA.

I found an alumni on CMU site, sent them an email, and he got back to me within hours (I think he emailed me back at 1:00am or something). I didn’t actually meet up with him until a week (or more) later, but it was only because it was during christmas and I think he said he went to visit family or something like that.

I live in the greater Boston area, and there were few alumni interviewers who live closer to me, but he had graduated in '09 and the guy closest to me had graduated in 1957… so I figured it would be better to talk with someone who had a more recent experience with the school. I had to take a train to Cambridge, which is over 20 minutes away (it took a little under an hour to get there through public transit).

Anyway, he was really cool, and It wasn’t really a strict interview. He wanted to know what questions I had, and he only asked me five or so questions, and they were pretty general.

You should do an interview if you can find a person who you would be able to meet up with. It does show you are interested, you’ll learn about the school, and it will give CMU another thing to look at when they consider you.
