Requesting Guidance for the SAT.

Hey everyone. I am a senior in high school who has had sort of a 'late-start' to the whole college experience along with my family. I will be the first one in not only my family but my entire extended family to actually apply and go to a U.S. university. My grades haven't been that well mainly cause I have become a slacker but I am doing what I can.

I took my SATs in March of junior year and received an 1860 (1240 M+Cr)/2400. I retook the SAT without any practice in November and received a 2010 (1350 M+Cr)/2400 with an 11 on the essay. I have less than a week to prepare for my last test (December test) and am aiming for a 2200-2400 so I can become a competitive candidate for my first choice school- NYU-Poly.

I came across this site via google this morning and it has been very helpful for me. I have bought different rec'd books by other users.

What I have right now are:

Gruber's Math Workbook
McGrawhill SAT Review
The blue book
Barron's CR book
Kaplan Writing book.

Direct Hits 1+2

For tonight my goal is to finish Barron's CR book and it's 80 word lists along with a practice writing essay and a gruber mock test.

Personally, my main weakness lies with my overconfidence with my math and reading. At home when I take practice tests, I make 750s but when I go to the test center, I land 6xx's. I need help with this. What do you guys recommend?

My writing is extremely weak and I plan on working on it.

Many people say that the SAT is all skill but I believe it takes much practice. I have had several friends who were in the 1500-1800 range like me and have worked very hard to hit the 2000+. It was very fortunate of me to even receive a 2010 without any type of 'warm up'. I hope to practice a lot this week and receive at least a 2200.

For the math and reading, just relax when you are taking the test. You know the stuff and know you can get in the 700’s. Just be confident in what you can do.

That looks like a good list of books you have. Just practice and study what you need to do and you will do great.

Sounds like you are on the right track. Keep doing what you’re doing and know that the stress you feel on test day is normal. It’s your body’s way to energizing you. Try to remind your self of that when you feel it overwhelming you.

Thank you everyone. Unfortunately, last night’s goal was a bit to much for me. I managed to finish 40 word lists (400 words) and most of what pertained to the fill in the black questions of the reading section were rather common knowledge in the barron’s book. Going to attempt to finish another 20 word lists tonight along with some basic review of grammar and essay writing and if I am up to it, a practice test.
