Are there any credits freshmen are required to take? (math, english, science)? Thanks!!!

W131 and M119 (I believe), but you can test out of both. The first is a writing course and the second, math.

I’m going to give you two answers here. Technically the answer is no, IU doesn’t require freshman take specific courses, BUT, IU does have graduation requirements, and most schools within the university share several general education requirements including W131, math, and an intensive writing course. Many of the schools require some credits hours in a “culture” class, and 3 basic areas: arts/humanities, math and natural science, and social sciences. Many freshman take English W131, a math class, etc. to start to meet these requirements. I suspect that your advisor would question why you are not meeting some of those basic requirements though. (I will admit though that many years ago I didn’t take W131 until I was a junior. I took a lit class instead. It never fit into my schedule until my junior year.) That said many freshman are able to begin taking an introductory course or two in their intended major or school immediately. Your best bet to understand IU’s requirements is to go to the iub.edu site, and search for Bulletins. Find the one appropriate to your school and major. Read through the general ed classes to get an idea about what you might take your freshman year.

You can test out W131 before you get to IU with ACT, SAT, or AP English scores. And if your SAT writing score and verbal score are high enough, they will give you two credits for W143. I don’t think IU itself offers any tests for testing out of W131.

you guys are awesome! thanks for the help!

do you guys know if Pschology is a required class (I know for a fact that some unis do this)? I’m taking AP Psychology right now and I am debating whether to take the AP exam or not.

It’s not required, but it would help you fulfill your gen ed requirements. It couldn’t hurt to take the test (unless you really dont want to spend the $60 to take it), and from what I remember AP psych was pretty easy.

Yeah, AP Psych was very easy the year I took it. My teacher was absolutely horrible, I don’t think I studied, and ended up with a 4 (and no I’m definitely not one of those CC super genius freaks).

Thank you! I wasn’t sure because I’m going to major in Business/Accounting and obviously Psych is not at all related but if it’s part of the gen ed requirements then I will definitely take it! And yeah Psych is pretty easy, our teacher told us to get a 5 you just have to get 68 out of 100 so it’s not bad. And the fee is actually $86 now. lol

Thanks again!
