Requirements for transferring colleges

I've attended one private college before, but I failed 4 of the 5 classes I attended my first semester and I am not able to return until I've made up enough credits to go back. I took a break for a couple years, and I want to apply to another private school, but they require 12 credits minimum for transfers. Can I just apply as a freshman and leave my previous college out of the application? If it matters, the acceptance rate for this school is close to 80% for incoming undergraduates and the average GPA is 2.0/4.0 and average SAT is around 950/1600 I think. In high school I had a 4.0/4.0 GPA and got a 1600/1600 on the SATs.

I would send them the previous college’s transcript unless they specifically say they don’t need it. Imagine how awful it would be if they somehow found out about it after they’d accepted you, and rescinded their acceptance. Just explain on the application why you did poorly before (partying? anxiety? depression? just not mature enough for college back then?), acknowledge and take responsibility for your mistakes, and make it clear that you’ve learned from your mistakes and are ready to do a great job at College #2. :)

If you know the specific college you would like to enroll in, you should make an appointment with the admissions office and discuss your concerns in person. Bring along copies of your HS transcript and of your first college’s transcript, as well as copies of your test scores, and a resume of what you’ve been up to since you left that first college. The admissions officer should be able to give you a reading on whether you are currently admissible, and will be able to suggest ways to strengthen your application if you aren’t admissible just yet.

And yes, you will have to submit an official copy of that ugly transcript from the first college when you apply.

Since you were previously matriculated at another institution, you aren’t able to apply as a freshman. My sister had the same problem…failed 10 of 13 credits, left the college and wanted to apply elsewhere as a freshman. She wasn’t able to do that.

Instead, she did exactly as happymom is telling you to do and was able to develop a game plan to make herself admissible for the school she wants to attend.
