What are Penn’s high school graduation requirements? My school only requires 3 years of some of the core classes and I am considering doubling up on history instead of taking a science in my senior year. Is this acceptable? Do you have to take a science course at Penn despite your major? I know it’s recommended to take the 5 core classes for all 4 years but I do not plan on entering any major having to do with science and would prefer to take a class more relevant to my future studies. Thank you for any input.
Penn doesn’t have any requirements, just recommendations, but taking a vigorous courseload is always best. At Penn you have to take a “general” set of courses in order to graduate, no matter what major.
I am doing the exact same thing this year (I’m a senior). I am taking Honors Ethics and AP European History rather than Ethics and AP Physics. I think it has to do with what major you are doing, but if you plan on doing something in the humanities especially (e.g. English, History, Economics, etc.), it is fine especially if your history that you replace the science with is an especially rigorous course. I am planning on majoring in Philosophy, Politics, and Economics, so I don’t think it will be as necessary for me to take a 4th year of science. Just make sure you have taken Physics, Bio, and Chem. If you haven’t, I would make sure you take that. If you have, then there is no problem doubling up on history.
