Just wondering how this is possible. Final report cards come out after May. Deposits for housing, etc. are due by May 1. So suppose I send in my deposit, and it is now May 20. How could they rescind admission?

It's easy. If you, for instance, get suspended from school or get Ds or Fs in some classes or if you fail to graduate, the college can rescind your admission. BTW, some colleges even rescind your admission if they learn that you lied on your application. Places like Harvard will do this even if you managed to graduate from their college. They rescind your admission along with rescinding your degree.

wow, good reason not to lie then

My school's valedictorian in '03 (year before I graduated) was pretty brilliant and got into Harvard. As it turned out later, he lied about disciplinary issues. Due to a series of events that I won't go into, my school's headmaster felt it necessary to prohibit the kid from making his valedictory address. Because our school's guest speaker that year was the (now-resigned) NJ governor, it was sorta a big deal and got onto the front page of a newspaper. A Harvard alum read about it, notified the school, and they kicked him out over the summer, before he even had a chance to go to the campus.

Xanatos you refering to Gov. McGreevey? I heard about a girl who kicked and fought over the fact that she wasn't named valedictorian at her high school. She got so angry that she sued her school. Eventually, the press picked it up and lo and behold they found that she plaigiarized her journalism articles. Guess what? She got booted out of Harvard before she could step foot inside.

Blair Hornstine. And she just plagiarized part of one article from Bill Clinton not every one of her articles. But this was for the Wash. Post so...big mistake. And she was really obnoxious

Yeah, it was McGreevey. I figured not everyone here may have heard of him. And this actually occurred the same year as Blair Hornstine, I think.

Who said anything about lying on the app? Please read the above question.

Do they care about quarter grades, or just course grades at the end of the year?

Course grades at the end of the year.

They have all summer long to rescind your admission over bad grades. Every admit letter I've seen makes the admission contingent upon successfully completing your HS studies with respectable grades. And they will want to see your final transcript as proof of both your grades and your diploma. If your grades take a signicant drop, the fact that you have paid a housing deposit won't cut much ice.

So if you are considering slacking off - don't do it. If you are already sweating about poor grades, it's time to buckle down and bring them up.

=( iono y i'm trying so hard this 2nd semester but bad luck keeps getting in my way. I'm getting like a 2.0 weighted n unweighted >.< 2 D's rite now. I'm so worried but no matter how much i try i just can't seem 2 bring it up. grr

What I don't like is that most schools will not tell you how far you would need to drop to be in danger. Because of this, I'm extremely paranoid even though I have all As except for a B and a B-.

mercury, then you'd have a lot of people doing the bare minimum

I understand that, but still, it would save a lot of stress. I don't know why I can't put this out of my mind. I'm on track to have 5 As and 2 Bs by the end of the year. Maybe it's because going to Cornell seems too good to be true, that I'm worried something will go wrong?

You were wondering how it was possible. I showed you one possibility and that they do, indeed, rescind admissions, be it for grades or something else.

Mercury,

If you earn 5 A grades andf 2 B grades, Cornell will VERY likely still take you. If you got 2 Cs, however, it might be a different story.

if a person's accepted to an ivy with a 4.0 uw, how much worse than straight A's do you think they'd have to get before their offer would be rescinded? anybody know this from experience (not necessarily that their ivy or selecitve school rescinded their offer but also those that did worse 2nd semester sr yr and didnt have their offer rescinded)?

Mercury, I'd be very suprised if Cornell rescinded for B's... or even a couple of C's. Im pretty sure the threat of rescinding is because they dont want you failing your classes and not graduating.

There is no way that Cornell would rescind for 5 As and 2 Bs. Not even a slight chance they would rescind--remember, they took you in the first place because they wanted you. They're not going to just go rescinding people (and screwing the kids over in the process) on a whim. It has to be something serious.
