Hi- I’m freaking out a bit, because I got accepted into my top school (Ithaca College) last week (EA), and I got a decent hunk of money from them as well. The 2nd quarter at my school just ended, and 2 of my grades just dropped significantly and suddenly, and I have no time to fix it since finalized grades are due literally tomorrow morning. My grade in AP bio dropped from an 86 to a 59 and my statistics grade from a 82 to a 62 (one low test grade). My grades in my other classes (AP Lit, Economics, etc) are still high 80s/90s. They haven’t asked for a mid year report as of yet. My first quarter grades are all high 80s/90s, and my GPA getting accepted was an 89.6.
Is it possible they could take back my acceptance/scholarships? Is there a way to appeal that if that happens? Is there anything I can do right now to make my situation better? If I keep my grades up 2nd semester will that help? What should I do? I’m sorry I’m so paranoid and scared.
Yes, you could have a problem. Go to your guidance counselor asap. He may have to intervene on your behalf. What happened? Some kind of explanation is warranted, but it needs to come from your counselor. The general rule is no D or F grades, and anything below 65 really isn’t going to work for most colleges. If you work you butt off, and get the overall grades back into the 70s, you might be okay, but that will likely have to be worked out between the college and your high school. Don’t delay, because most colleges require mid year grades. You can’t hide this info. Good luck.
You should be very concerned. A 59 is an F, right? And a 62 is a D-? Yeah, that’s definitely cause for alarm, @snappledap , I’m sorry to say.
Agree, it could be a problem. The quote used often on CC is that one should avoid D’s, F’s and felonies. Looks like you now have two of the three. Talk to your guidance counselor to see if the school requires mid-year grades. And do everything you can to get those grades up into at least the C range ASAP – meet with teachers, get tutors, ask for extra work, watch online classes like from Khan academy…anything you can do.
Are 59 and 62 your midterm grades? or the 2nd quarter? If second quarter, what will the midterm avg be?
Go see your counsellor tomorrow!
@HRSMom they’re my quarter 2 grades. I passed my midterms in both classes. With the midterm averaged in, I have passing grades in both classes. But I really don’t know how that will be reported, my school changed the whole grade distribution system this year.
Go see your GC. The quarter stuff is not importanat to the school. They only want full semester avg. Try not to worry until you know that you have to worry, ok?
@HRSMom yeah, looking back, the only class I think I should be really worried about is bio. The stats grade averaged in with Q1, Q2 and my midterm is an 82-- bio will be a 66. I guess one bad semester grade is better than two, so I feel slightly better. Still gonna talk to my GC tomorrow. Thanks for your help.
Okay, @snappledap , then everyone’s right in saying you need to meet with your GC ASAP. Only your GC can really let you know what’s reported, after all.
Also talk to your bio teacher and try to get back on course in that subject.
