I've just been sent a likely letter from a pretty prestigious university (rank top 5 on U.S news). However, just this weekend, I got a letter from my school saying that b/c i've had 3 unexcused absenses (2 days for being sick and 1 day studying for competition-but i didnt have any doctors note for these days), i've commited some type of class C offense.

This is really p i s sing me off b/c since i go to a freaking ghetto school, this is obviously aimed at students who doesnt even show up to class. Now I have to meet up with my principal. I know this is my fault, but i could probably learn alot more studying by myself instead of going to class. Does any other schools have a policy like this?

Anyway, besides the rant, my question is: how do the schools notify the colleges of these things or how do colleges find out about these things?

First...breathe..if you are in a "ghetto" school...then they are probably not versed in the nuances of a top tier university. My guess is you have some ideas as to who to talk to about this situation. It may be nothing more than "playing" the game, and getting a letter from your doctor-or your parents--because you were sick those 2 days...you might have your parents meet with your guidance counselor so that everyone is on board with getting that notice removed from your file...you might ask the guidance counselor what happens with this notice...it may be nothing more than a heads up, and not actually sent to the admissions office. You might have your parents check your school file/transcript to see if anything is mentioned there. Typcially the schools just see your transcript, and your mid-term report. If the school does not post such things as unexcused absences, you may be ok-this time-if you get a second note-then maybe they post that on your transcript. Hang in there and Good Luck!

No, they are not going to rescind you because you missed three days.

My school has the same policy, per trimester. However, in cases of illness it is excused. At my school, there is no practical difference between an excused and an unexcused absence. When students travel during the trimesters, it is marked "unexcused" on our planned release forms but that doesn't do anything.

can't your parents back you up? I mean, in most cases a note from mom or dad or whomever after absence is enough, so will they support you saying they knew about you being sick, etc

I mean isn't a parents note enough for 2-3 days, most of the time if you have alot of absences you need a doctors slip

I would check the policy, if they are saying you need a doctors note for each and every absence, that is absurd

thx for the help everyone. i had a really big rant typed out but it wouldnt submit lol. hopefully it works out. On the letter it says that this is a crime (class C offense) but hopefully it can be cleared. I'm just really mad b/c i stayed home 1 day to STUDY, which is completely opposite from what others do.

citygirlsmom: my school considers every absence w/o a doctors note unexcused...probably b/c in the past too many parents assisted their child in missing school.

that is just strange!!! usually a few is okay, but when absences get to be too much then a note is needed

so, if you have just have a bad cold with a fever you are supposed to make a Drs appt THAT day, yeah like that is easy, or go to the emergency room to get a Drs note each and every time even if you have a good record

that is just a stupid rulle and colleges will see that

having that rule is a waste of resources fror most kids

my D had 1 absence a year until this year and she has had three, mental health days...if we had to have a Drs appointment each time it would be a total waste of resources, insurance etc..sure if they were absent alot that would be one thing

how that helps you, colleges won't care and calling it a C crime is weird
