Rescind for a B-?

Sorry but I had to post this thread because my Korean parents are having a serious case of paranoia over one of my classes. I currently have a B- in US Government, albeit my straight A/A- High School career and will not be able to raise it any higher than a B+. My parents think that its highly likely that I'll be rescinded admission if I receive the current score on my final transcript and send it to Caltech. Is rescinding admission a plausible situation in this case? All of my other classes are A/A-.

:P no, a single B will not obliterate/reverse your acceptance at Caltech. just no C's lol

The rule of thumb I heard was don't let your overall gpa drop more than a point from where it was when you were accepted. You're perfectly fine.

you are fine. i had 3 B's my second semester.

I don't know of a single person that got rescinded by Caltech. There are some benefits to attending a small private school.

If an admitted high school student gets rescinded because of poor grades in their last semester of high school courses then it is merciful they not attend tech. The first two 10 week semesters leave little room for slacking(exceptions for the super duper smart) even under Pass/Fail.

Batllo, I think I have to disagree with you about your notions about the terms under pass/fail. My observation was that it was pretty hard to fail, so you could slack considerably. The main danger was that you wouldn't be ready when 3rd term came around, and then your GPA would take a hit.

You're worried you're going to get rescinded for a B in government? Dude. Relax.

Batllo, your statement convinces me you don't attend Tech. The first two terms leave quite a bit of room for slacking. For instance, 50% to pass Ph 1a? I even know people who slack while on grades. It's usually good enough for a C or even a low B depending on the curve and the class. If you do all the homework and exams somewhat seriously, you will pass (hopefully). It's getting A's that's difficult.

I misspoke and defer to webhappy and Dauntless9.

Thank you all. My point exactly to my parents was that a single B- will not affect my acceptance at all, but for some odd reason, they are still paranoid about the grade. ■■■.

Try to raise it to a B or B+ just because those grades are farther away from the C range! It’ll probably give you peace of mind too.

I highly doubt you will be rescinded, but keep in mind, there are a few really damn sharp kids on the waiting list… (not me, I withdrew my application to caltech mid Jan because I didn’t see myself actually going there). I’m just saying your parents’ fears aren’t so illogical. On one hand, they are a bit paranoid and should back off, but on the other hand, you might want to just consider talking it out with them and just appeasing them, finishing your HS strong.

Will caltech really rescind for a C? I’m really afraid because I have a C for the next marking period… 5 A’s and one C. will caltech rescind?? i’d rather work something out with the school than get pulled altogether =(

Is this serious? Lol I’d hate to meet some of you people in real life. You’re all probably so stiff and rigid.

It’s probably not a great idea to judge people so quickly, and on so little, Yakyu.

I know of one case where someone had their admission put on hold for a gap year because their final transcript had all C’s. Ironically, he’s one of the brightest people I know, but was unaware he would have to send in a final transcript until he was asked a month after the deadline. Point being, if you have something better than all C’s, you should be ok. They would only rescind admission or put it on hold if they feared you would flame out in a year or two. (5 A’s and a B or C should be fine, as others have been saying)

well i have a friend who had straight c’s,
and he didn’t get rescinded,
(the admissions office made some sort of deal with him)
but he almost did, so be careful

^ I’m pretty sure we’re talking about the same person. The deal they made was a gap year to show he wouldn’t flame out.

i never said we weren’t :D
