i just realized that ive never turned any papers in to the counselors about my community service...like verification stuff. i said i would ahve done about 100 hours total of community service by the end of this year on my application. does community service show up on your transcript? is it one of the things colleges can rescind for when they look at your final transcript? after i got accepted i kind of slacked and just forgot about getting verification stuff for my community service and stuff...i didnt realzie it might go on your transcript....is this bad?

Though I'm far from an expert on these matters, I don't see why you'd be expected to turn in community service verifications to your school counselors. Community service is something completely independent of school, in most cases. So why should the school need to be involved?

well do the colleges verify hours at all? how do they know if what you said on your application was true?

Some schools do request verification of community service hours especially if the high school gives credit for community service (yes, at my D's high school, because there were a minimum # of community service hours required for graduation, it did show up on the transcript) .

Yes, if it shows that you misrepresented the information on your application (misrepresentation can always be grounds for a college rescinding admission, or even your degree).

Some high schools put community service on one's transcript and also require verification. Some states require community service in order to qualify for merit scholarships to in-state public and private colleges. You need to follow up with your guidance office, which probably has at least one counselor available over the summer.

Northstarmom -- Just as a side note, I just talked to our high school this morning, and there will be no counselors there until mid to late-August.

I think you can also ask the question to your principal since at many schools they work on a different calendar and some are working over the summer.

I don't think you need to worry about this. If the college wants verification that you did what you said you did, they will ask you. If you have the paper verification, there won't be a problem. Our school only puts academic information on the transcript. When it comes down to it, how does a college really know how much an applicant states is true? I am not advocating lying. But they can't check everything. My son accurately stated how many hours he spent each week doing theater and music, but it is essentially his word that he spends x number of hours each week practicing his instruments. If you have the documentation in your posession, I would not worry about this at all. The only exception to this is if you are required to have community service for graduation. If that is the case, then you need to get your documentation to the high school. Otherwise, I would not lose sleep over this one.

for ec's outside of school without credit, there really is no way for colleges to verify every applicant's every ec.... unless something clearly looks skeptical, of course

well i said i did about 50 hours for key club. at the time of application i had only about 30 hours, but i figured since i had gotten 30 hours in the first couple months of school, 20 hours more would probably be really easy to get by the end of the year. also that made it a nice looking number of 100 total hours throughout my high school career (probably nothing compared to you guys). after i got accepted though i stopped getting signatures for the verification forms because i figured it didnt really matter anymore...i talked to a counselor and she said it doesnt go on the final transcript, so i figure im fine...hopefully.
