I am from Egypt, and I'm not sure whether I am black or not. So, on the college application, I checked the African American box. I was fortunate to be accepted into college. I recently got a letter from my peer advisior who is in the African American Affairs. I am still not sure if I'm African American or not. If I am not, will the school think I 'lied' (I don't mean to) and rescind my acceptance?

Ummm, don't respond?

Are they asking you to prove anything?

They will not rescind your application if you're from Egypt and can explain your situation.

Well if I were you I wouldn't bring it up, Since you did it in earnest and not with an intention to deceive, it's all right. Just play along. If your peer advisor eventually finds out, tell him what you told us.

So, I'm not an African American? What is the race of an Egyptian?

guess what, you are from egypt and egypt is in africa. Therefore, you ARE an african-american. Is that what they mean when they ask, no. But are you? Yes. I'm not sure how it works but you could have one hell of a lawsuit about schools using race in admissions if they rescinded you for lying since egpyt is in africa (clearly they want black kids but this is a great way of shoving their political correctnesss back in their face) :)

sorry Op would not be considered African American

Black or African American. A person having origins in any of the Black racial groups of Africa. It includes people who indicate their race as "Black, African Am., or Negro,"or provide written entries such as African American, Afro American, Kenyan, Nigerian, or Haitian.

Everybody means black when they say African-American, but there are ways you can swing it. (Which is why I happen to think its a flawed term)

You should be fine, but like someone said, I'd avoid bringing it up.

if they mean black they should say black. because theyre trying to hide their desire to use race in admissions, they have to accept the fact that an egyption is from africa and living in america makes him an african american

sounds to me like you are African, not African-American
but I agree with you that it was the most applicable group

edit: I got the impression that you were an Egyptian living in Egypt. Nope, you did nothing wrong, and there is really no way they can argue it with you - you are MUCH more legitimately "African-American" than the average black guy from Detroit. They choose to use egregiously PC terms, they better make sure they mean exactly what they want them to mean...

Actually, I'm living in US, but I'm not a citizen.

In such a case you are african but not american.
Be very careful with what you do next, in my opinion you lied on your application. Just hope that they would not care.

The box said "African American, African, Black"

So...was I still lying?

You are African, no doubt.

oh if the box said african you are definitely african and NOT lying

yes youre fine

You're African, not African-American.

You are fine. No matter what, it's the most applicable group anyways.
