I applied and was accepted to UCLA for Fall '10 as a pre-psych major.

About a week ago they called me and said because I dropped a major prereq (chemistry) that my offer might be rescinded. Since then I have completed about 40% of an independent study chemistry course that they'd accept (at BYU), but this morning I got an e-mail rescinded my admission.

I am going to try to appeal in a week and a half when I am done with the course, and I was wondering if anyone had any good ideas how to approach this or what to include.

My general idea is to: (1) Restate the situation surrounding why I didn't take the class in Spring focusing on the family problems and registration difficulties that plagued that semester. (2) State how I have completed the course they required and did so in a timely way that represents my qualification, dedication, and hardwork and (3) give the reasons why I wish to be a part of UCLA and what I think I could offer them as a student. I also plan on sending along some letters of recommendation I did not include in my original admission.

Things I already know: appeals (especially for UCLA) rarely work, my major is highly impacted which was the reason there was so little tolerance, they require new and compelling evidence.

I am (obviously) very worried and saddened by this turn of events, does anyone have any other ideas on what I should do to increase my chance? Or any comments on my plan? Please?

Your reasons for appeal do seem enough for a successful appeal, but as you know, UCLA appeal acceptance rate is very low, and your major is very impacted. What I would suggest first before writing a formal appeal is to call UCLA admissions on monday, explain to them in detail what you wrote here and what exactly your situation is, and ask them what you should do next. Some people on these forums actually called UCLA Admissions when they were rejected or rescinded, and because of their situation, were granted admissions right there on the phone. SO, FIRST CALL UCLA ADMISSIONS, TELL THEM YOUR SITUATION, AND SEE HOW IT UNFOLDS FROM THERE.

Thank you for your suggestion Lakerss, I had been on the phone with admissions since they first called me and I have explained to them my situation and intent. The woman I primarily spoke to hinted that when they were deciding she tried to convince them to let me stay admitted, but after I told her I had been rescinded she agreed that an appeal (though they usually fail) would be a suitable course of action once I complete the class.

Any additional input would be very appreciated!

Are you sure UCLA is going to consider the Independent Study course you are taking in Chemistry as sufficient to meet the pre-requisite? Chemistry classes are usually taken in conjunction with a required lab course that also has to be successfully completed to get credit for the course and it does not sound like you are doing any labs in the course you are taking.

The woman I spoke to in admissions said that the pre-req did not require a lab, and that the course I was enrolled in was from a suitable source (one of the few online universities they accept) and that my class met the pre-req. I was worried about that as well.

I have been accepted at UCLA for Fall 2011 for Sociology. My GPA is 3.8 and I have completed all my IGETC classes and will be meeting all mandatory requirements. However, I am planning to drop a class that is not a prerequisite for my major (Sociology) It is also not one of the courses I had submitted to UCLA that I plan to take.

Anyone with inputs on whether a “W” on my final transcript will cause my offer to be withdrawn. I have one other “W” from 4 years ago when I was still in High School and dropped a class that I had started at the CC.

I am completely stressed out. Plan to talk to admissions tomorrow but need be able to sleep tonite. Any advice/comments?
