I do the IB diploma, and got accepted at UNC with my predicted score of 39-41 out of 45. Right now, I'm doing my IB exams, and I'm scared I'll get around 34-35. Will this affect the acceptance? Will my offer be rescinded?

Yeah probably, tough break man.

Just kidding. I think people are way to worried about having their offer rescinded. It probably takes a great deal to actually have it happen. I don't think tests like that would knock you out.

bym_iwtl: I don't think high schools actually receive those IB scores back until the middle of the summer some time, and to my knowledge, UNC never requests that exam score. As I remember, my daughter's class had an IB graduation, but not until mid-August, because that's about the time they receive the scores and will know who's graduating (receiving the diploma) and who isn't. Most students do better than they think they will, but for UNC, I think the IB program/classes themselves (and how well you do in those) are what they care about (my best guess). I'm not even sure they ask for the separate IB subject exam scores, and that would be of use to you if you did well enough on them to place out of a course or courses, or for placement purposes.

we do receive our scores by early july, and in the admission package there was a piece of paper saying "final transcript" - I have to send them my final scores in order to finalize my decision.

bym_iwtl: Well, I know your final transcript goes in, but--at least in my daughter's high school--that IB final exam score did not go on her transcript, to my knowledge. She passed the exam and received the diploma, but I don't think anyone ever asked for that information. Her high school was out by the end of May (2 years ago), so that final transcript went in way before July. Maybe your high school is different and will put the final IB exam score on your transcript, but I'm almost positive admissions will not give any weight to that score.

And doing well on the individual subject /IB higher level exams is important to you and to UNC, only in terms of placement. They don't even require those scores, but do ask you to self-report them. Here's the blurb from the website:

"While we don't require SAT Subject Tests or results from AP or IB exams for admission, we encourage you to self-report any scores you've received on your application.."

Again, though, unless they've changed things from 2 years ago, I honestly don't think they consider that one final IB exam score. If you want to ease your mind, though, call admissions tomorrow and ask. I really wouldn't worry about it, though. Good luck!

They rescinded some kid from Greensboro NC a few years ago because after he received his offer of admission and accepted it, he blew off his second semester and literally flunked a number of classes, including some that he failed to even show up for the final exam. He sued. His lawsuit was tossed out with a strong admonition from the judge, "you deserved what they did. Shame on you!"

So, it would likely take failure of courses to get pulled.

On my daughters offers of acceptance at all of her colleges she applied to, they all stated, "contingent on successful completion of your existing course of study." Meaning, you have to pass and you have to graduate. That is true for everyone.

Good luck.

I am one of 800 wl'ed and cannot get a handle on any thing about when or IF they will begin working the list. What have you heard?I hate not knowing as all my friends are no pumped about their colleges and I am in limbo.HELP!

tarheels89 - did you call the admissions office? I'm happy to go to Carolina but am in the same position with three schools. Give them a call and they'll probably give you an estimate of when you might hear back. I'd go ahead and start bonding to another school, though.
