Rescinded offer

Can a school rescind an offer for not providing the sufficient/correct financial aid documents?

they may not rescind the offer of admission, but they may not offer you any financial aid. CHECK with the school.

Any financial aid package you are offered with an early action/decision is based on estimated financial information since you provided before the end of the year. Your actual package will change in accordance with the actual numbers you provide when your family gets their year end statements for income and assets for the 2008 return. This happens all of the time since many families do not wait until they have all of their 2008 info before filing their financial aid papers, and it is recommended that you estimate since early submission is important. However, the actual money you get will be based on the final actual figures you provide.

Additionally, if your family is selected for verification, and the school interprets/uses your financial information differently from how you presented it, they will change the aid awarded. I have seen this happen at the college where I work. I have students who all of a suddent can’t register for the next semester because halfway through the present one, their aid is changed and they now owe money when they thought they had cleared. It can be a nightmare.

Also, I know this question has been asked a lot …especially lately with the economy…but…
what if circumstances have changed since you applied ED and now the FA offered doesn’t make the school affordable? Without going into too much detail…my family looks good on paper, but the debt we have atm is ridiculous and there is no way I can afford to pay tuition. How do I explain this to an officer, my FA adviser isn’t too nice/understanding…

Debt will not make a difference. IF it is the result of something catastrophic, such as huge medical bills due to an illness/accident or sudden loss of income (by layoff, not by choice), the financial aid office can choose to take that into consideration - but they do not have to do so. Consumer spending - including rising ARM mortgage payments - will make no difference.

As for your original question, if you were asked to provide documents that you have not provided, the school is not going to disburse your aid. Until all info is received as requested, you will not get your aid.

And yes, aid offers can be adjusted for many reasons (incorrect info reported, scholarships that were not originally known about, government/state grants that are posted after the original aid offer, etc.). The total of all aid cannot exceed the cost of attendance. Need based aid can be adjusted if need changes.
