Rescinding/Academic Probation

not sure what the noun form of "rescind" is. dont think there is one.

has anyone heard of past students who were accepted who were immediately placed on academic probation or rescinded for their freshman years? im just wondeirng what kind of grades necessitate such action.

I know the letter notes that there just cant be a significant drop in grades. do you thikn this constitutes "significant"?
Let's say for HS i have a GPA of around 3.5, 4.15 weighted. 1st semester senior year i got a 3.6 uw/ 4.6 weighted, 3 As, 2 Bs. NOw, in this HYPOTHETICAL situation, my third quarter grades were 3 Bs, 2 Cs (2.6 uw, 3.6 weighted). I think by the end of the semester, in this HYPOTHETICAL situation, which is deinfitely not true by any stretch of the imagination, I might have 4 Bs and 1 A. I think that might be ok, but how about if I end up with 4 Bs and 1 C? do you think im hypothetically in trouble?

i gotta get my F-ing act togehter.

Hmm, good question. Just how much of "slacking" is ok? (Not that I am slacking.. haha) cough

The following are three pages on this topic from A is for Admission, a 1996 book about Ivy League admissions. It was written by a former Dartmouth admissions officer. Given that it's neither the same school nor the same years, please take it with a grain of salt, but it can be very useful.

we were talking to an admissions representative during Cornell Days and she said Cornell never really rescinds admissions...unless you fail or don't graduate...at first she didn't even know what it was, and then was like, oh no I've never heard of that happening :)

not sure what the noun form of "rescind" is. dont think there is one

It's recission (in case you still care)...

Spanks: Don't believe it. Just because a student ambassador never heard of it, doesn't mean it doesn't happen. She never heard of it, because they don't end up at Cornell after admission is rescinded.

it wasn't a student ambassador, i was at the admission office talking to the lady behind the desk

the point is that you have to screw up really, really badly to get your admissions taken back

i think i'm gonna try and play by the dartmouth rules to be safe...

dammit i'm breaking the dartmouth rules...

What are they comparing? Senior to Junior? Senior semesters? I was accepted ED without them seeing any of my senior grades, and my first semester grades weren't great. Second semester will actually be an improvement, but still isn't near my junior 4.0.

Hmm?

senior semesters i believe. Pre acceptance->post acceptance

That's sort of strange, because the only grades they saw were post-acceptance.

they didn't see first quarter/trimester grades?

i think someone important (maybe) told me only about 1 or 2 people each year have their application rescinded, probably because they failed/cheated/something very bad like homicide. if anything, do not cheat and get caught. colleges, especially cornell, is very very big on academic integrity

oh yeah, the lady told me not to kill anyone

someone else advised me not to kill anyone...I forget who...and it wasn't a college related directive...hmmmm

Nope, sparticus, they didn't see any senior grades! There was a topic about this a while back in late November or December. A bunch of Cornell ED kids had the college request first marking period grades, but a lot didn't. My guidance office confirmed that none of my senior records were requested or sent.

I got in ED and then sent my midyear when that came in. Not dismal at all, just a little lower than normal. Should be around a "reasonable" grade drop.

okay, Academic Probation , what's the diff with recission?

The kid I stayed with over Cornell Days said that his final averages were literally D's in 2 classes and he didn't get rescinded or even put on probation. He said that they do not even receive your final grades until July, and by then housing assignments are made and nothing happens.

I'm sorry to bother with this thread, but I had a question for those accepted by Cornell through ED or RD. I'm currently a junior who's planning to apply to Cornell next year, possibly through ED. My GPA is roughly 3.8 UW, 4.2 W, exactly 2100 on the new SAT, 700s - 750s on 3 SATs, an international EC, three leadership positions; recs, essays are expected to be good. What outcome should I expect if I apply ED? Thanks.

probably a favorable one, but nobody knows for sure
