Is the case of UMD rescinding your offer of admission at all common? I know that they receive your final transcripts, so would a significant drop in grades affect the individual, or is it only if you flat out fail a course?

I'm assuming my grades have dropped a good amount, but in my personal case I don't know if I should be too worried because I had an extended surge of excused medical absenses this term, so I hope they would sympathize with that because I am still trying to work hard...in a general concensus though, what's their policy?

My daughter has been struggling with senioritis all year, and is now undergoing a series of medical tests related to a possible cancer diagnosis. She hasn’t dropped any of her tough classes, but several C’s are cropping up with the potential for a D or 2.

I was told that once you’re in, you’re in. If you received a scholarship, it’s yours unless you are arrested or fail to graduate. The basis for admission was the first semester grades.

Every college has the ability to rescind their admission offer, but it happens very rarely. The main reason you take your final report card is proof for admission. If you think about it you can have straight A’s for the 1st 3 quarters, and fail absolutely everything for the 4th, but still pass because of the avg. UMD will not look kindly upon the person who does that. The transcripts are handed over to your counselor at UMD who has a impact in what classes you can take, you don’t ever want them thinking that you should only take the easiest b/c you slacked off!

Medical again is different, but if you just sit there and say I had senioritis it won’t look good in their eyes.

Terp 80 best wishes for your DD, I hope she is okay

That is definetly new, last yr for orientation you had to show up with a sealed final transcript, this was for ORIENTATION. For our DS in scholars, we had to have college board re-send his AP scores along with verification from the school.

I will tell/say this I don’t trust anything one person at UMDCP tells me, b/c from experience I have had to spend many hours talking to many different people, they are all kind and informative, but ea. has only one piece to the puzzle.

I have now paid 4 times for the AP scores to be sent to UMD (1 for admission, 1 for Fall reg.,1 in mid-term and 1 for Spring. These are AP courses taken in 2007/08) They are AGAIN asking for his transcript along with the AP, which is the 5th time for him and he is only registering as a SOPHOMORE, the high school even repeated to me the dates they sent them to UMD. They are now sending me 5 sealed transcripts b/c they only keep hs records for a yr. THIS WAS ONLY YESTERDAY that I dealt with the problem!

TRUST ME WHAT THEY SAY AND WHAT THEY DO CAN BE 2 DIFFERENT THINGS.

OUR DS IS IN SCHOLARS AND THEY ARE STILL ASKING FOR HIS TRANSCRIPT…HE IS ON PRESIDENTIAL MERIT AND NOW DEAN’S LIST AT UMDCP, DON’T THINK YOU’RE IN THE FREE AND CLEAR , ESP. AS A STUDENT THAT HAS NOT SAT IN ONE DESK AT THE COLLEGE!

REALITY CHECK: UMD has a ton of waitlisted. This might sound harsh, but the reality is you need them more than they need you. It is not the time to COAST! If there is a legitimate excuse than of course they will work with you. This school truly does try to work with every student! However, to state they are not going to check your final transcripts is to say…CUT EVERY CLASS B/C YOU’RE IN… NO WORRIES!

i called about final transcripts too and they said we dont need them!!!
but for some reason others have said that we do need them…?
im still confused…
but if UMD said we didnt need them, we dont them lol

I actually spoke to two people in admissions and both said the same thing…you will not need to submit a report card or final transcript. I also looked through the website regarding once admitted and the freshman orientation and nothing. The only reason you may need to bring a transcript with you to orientation they said is to help with the advising for registration, in case they cannot access your file or whatever. I don’t want to tell seniors to coast, I also just don’t want them to be misinformed or panic unnecessarily. If in doubt, call and take names.

I am not trying to freak anybody out either. I am just giving you real life experience for a Scholars student that is there right now. As I have stated last week was the 5th time he was asked by UMD Scholars for his transcript. This might all relate to his jump start and AP courses, since those courses fulfill certain reqs. Thus, if you have either of them on your transcript I highly suggest to take a sealed transcript with you. Sealed is key here!

When you register in July, your counselor will plot your entire education career. In mid Oct. you will meet again, then agin in Dec for reg., then again in Mar and then agin end of April. They constantly review your records. If they don’t have the transcript for verification you might have to take a course you don’t want to take! As a freshman you are just learning how to navigate the school, you don’t want to add the pressure of doing a drop/add for your schedule in that equation.

He is not alone in this, his friend was forced to register for a class b/c they did not have the AP scores. By the time he got the scores to them he had to drop and add courses, since the one that fit in his time scheduled was closed, thus he had to move other classes to get that one class. Just like HS you need to fill in one square before you can go onto the next and at UMD sometimes certain courses are only offered in the fall or spring, you miss it for that semester and you have thrown everything off kilter!

The UMD Orientation website states under the list of thing to bring to Orientation: “Documents that you need for meeting with campus staff (these may be unofficial transcripts, AP scores, etc. These are not mandatory documents required by the university, rather supplemental documents that may assist in the advising and registration process.)”

On the whole AP score thing, do you think it would be enough to write down during AP registration that I want the scores sent directly to UMD?
And my school will almost never give out transcripts. It’s nearly impossible to get one.

yes, gina, that will probably work. This summer, you can keep checking your unofficial UMD transcript on Testudo and see when your scores are uploaded. 2 years ago, D found out her AP scores (or deduced them, based on the credit she received) on Testudo, BEFORE she received the AP scores in the mail from Collegeboard!

It seems to me there was one class that she had to follow-up to get recorded correctly on her transcript. Just keep an eye on it, and know what you should be getting credit for.

Astromom is right have them sent directly, but also have them sent to the hs and your home. Our error was I threw the scores away (DS was accepted, registered and thought that was the end of story…we also moved at the same time to another state so I didn’t want to take extra paperwork!)
I have never heard of a HS that will not send HS transcripts, they may make it difficult for you to get one to hand carry, but is the university requests it they will send it.

NO FEAR, UMD might have beaucratic problems, but I will admit they are really understanding and sympathetic when you talk to them about beaucratic issues! ;)

Well they will probably send them to the school, but my school will not only charge me, but if they don’t get around to it before the end of the school year, they’ll tell me tough luck and maybe send them in September if I call them and bother them about it.

If you look on the acceptance threads many kids this yr were told they were waitlisted for fall, but accepted for spring, and then there are kids that only got spring. I think maybe this yr they did waitlisting for fall. I know last yr there was no waitlisting, but it seems that this yr there is.

My son is also in scholars entering his Sophmore year and his experience has been very smooth. The AP scores were sent once and his credits were applied correctly. We never sent his final transcripts to UMD - this was done by his high school. For orientation, we brought along a HS transcript to be used for registration but it was not needed because they had a copy of his.
