Rescinding application

I would like to know when the admissions office rescind applications, or how they go about doing it. I applied and was accepted to UVM via priority application. i also received a scholarship. I had a terrible first semester senior year. The admissions office told me previously that i did not have to send in my mid year transcript if i was already accepted. I recieved two d's in ap classes, and a d in an honors class. I had a rough semester in many areas of my life. I have recently gotten help, and really turned around. I right now, have all a's in my classes, and plan to keep it that way. I realize my chances of being rescinded are high, but would the admissions office see my improvement, and just accept i had a bad semester? I've never dropped below a 3.8 gpa. please help and let me know if there is anything that i can do to decrease my chances of being rescinded.

You should be fine. And they’ll generally ask you to explain your situation first before they downright rescind you.

Are you sure? I am only taking those three classes… That GPA = 1.8. and even if i get all A’s in the second semester, i will receive a 2.9, i think… for the year… Do you know specifically about UVM? I am freaking out. My parents will be so dissapointed. It’s not like i dont do other things besides those classes… I have two internships, and work. How do you know that “i should be fine” ? Sorry. This is really nerve-racking.

You should really explain yourself. If you have all D’s in your core classes, that’s really a problem and colleges can’t help but assume that you’re slacking off because you’ve already been accepted. Although like I previously mentioned that colleges do generally ask you to explain your situation, I think it might be a better idea to confront them about your problems and explain to them.

But before you do anything I would definitely ask around others (and definitely your guidance counselor) for advice. It’d be nice if others posted here as well.

I was accepted after these grades happened, and ever since I’ve been accepted, I could not be more motivated to get good grades! Like I said, I do not need to send mid year reports, just my final. If I get all A’s in for second semester, would they look past the D’s?

It would be nice if other’s posted. that would help.

Explain it. I had a really bad highschool career due to heart issues, and when I explained it they were totally understanding. Colleges understand. Or, at least, they try to. However, they can’t understand unless you tell them.

Just email them and explain your situation.

I am nervous that they will rescind me right away… As in I won’t even get a chance to show my second semester grades.

Nah most schools won’t do that. If it’s academically I’m pretty sure they’ll give you a chance to justify it. Just email them.

I thought you didn’t have to send your midyear report?

YoU don’t…

“Please be aware that our offer of admission is contingent upon successful completion of any academic work in progress and maintenance of the same level of good citizenship that was reflected in your application for admission.”

the people that know the answer are in admissions at UVM, not here on the forum. Why not call them and ask? Maybe they’ll even say you’ll be ok and put your mind at ease.

They’re going to see your grades eventually, it isn’t like if you don’t bring it up they’ll never notice. Colleges like maturity and students that face their problems head-on. Calling or emailing shows this, and furthermore if there is some way to work it out by taking a summer school class or something else this next semester, now is the time to find out. If you wait until August for them to get your final transcripts it will be too late, and another strike against you will be that you clearly knew about the issue since February but did nothing.

Thank you for your response. I am questioning whether I should call, or talk with them when I visit them next weekend.

Contact THEM before they decide to send you a warning. Explain your situation and accept responsibility for it-- they may go easy on you. (BTW my neighbor is Dean at Hopkins…so trust me on this.) If you talk to them first, you may be able to keep your acceptance and your scholarship. If you don’t, I think you may be rescinded.

a side issue: is a D grade a grade which allows you passing credit for the three courses at your High School? If not, do you have enough units to graduate, and separately, do you have the required college prep courses to get into UVM?

A D grade is passing. I do have enough units to graduate, that is not an issue, and I do have all of the required college prep courses for UVM. I am going up for an admitted student day, I will try to talk with them then. If not, I will call.

Given the crush of students they’re likely to have, you might want to see if you can schedule a 10-15 minute appointment with an adcom so that you don’t end up just talking to the work-study student at the admission office counter.

D is passing at my school. I do have enough units to graduate, and have completed all of the requirements. the two ap classes are just extra.
