would it hurt me to send stanford my research abstract? i know they don't really want it, but still

They say not to send extra samples like 5 times in the app, and it's too close to letter-time for it to probably make much difference to them beyond being a nuisance to file.

I think the general rule on this is to only send extra stuff if you get waitlisted.

Where did that come from??
The general rule is that if you send extra stuff, they'll throw it away without looking. This is probably done by the office people (students working in the office and such) before the application ever gets to the admissions officer. (Thus sending an extra rec letter, for example, can be counterproductive, as one randomly chosen letter will be thrown away, and it could turn out to be your best one...)

You do, however, have one "additional info" page where you can put whatever you want. So if your abstract fits on one page, you can put it there.

^Well, a lot of places ask for you to send additional info if you get waitlisted, and I know that generally, people will send updates of accomplishments and such in that event.
