Research and MIT?

Many applicants have research on their applications for MIT. Does MIT care about research if it hasen't been published or recogmized through Intel or Siemens?
My problem is that you can love research and a true passion for research even though it hasen't been nationally recognized. Your research could have been driven by your interest in that particualr topic or a family member suffering from a disease/disorder.
Does it still have an impact on admissions, in MIT's even if it hasen't been widely recognized in the country?

I believe that it is. Not all people have access to such competitions.

Yes, they care  Contrary to popular belief on the CC threads, you do not need a national recognition to get into MIT. Admissions knows what actually counts.

I hope they look at that. Last year, I practically lived at lab. I was very disappointed when nobody at my local science fair could even understand what I was talking about. In fact, that was the topic of my main essay. I said that I learned a lot from that experience, and that allowed me to make new changes to my experiments. Then I ended up becoming a Siemens Semifinalist.
I have many “national awards,” but most of them aren’t all that prestigious. If I don’t get in, I know it would be my SAT scores (only 2230) and B’s in English.

@ grouptheory
A 2230 is not a bad SAT score. That’s actually really good!! Gluck tomorrow :D

“If I don’t get in, I know it would be my SAT scores (only 2230)”

what the heck are you saying… look at the middle 50 percentile of students accepted to MIT on collegeboard.

I’ve been reading around here and all I see are people with scores over 2300. Actually, I’m starting to doubt the quality of my essays. Who knows? Can’t wait until 9PM!

^^

That’s because people applying with 2000-2100’s aren’t posting their scores :D

Anything in the ~700+ range will qualify you on the SAT for MIT. Seriously. Scores don’t really matter if you get above a 700. Hell, it probably wont matter if you get a 670.

especially if that 670 is in writing ;)

I would argue that someone with a 2230 would have a much better chance at getting into MIT than someone with a 2300-2400. They want thinkers who know how to handle failure; Not people who can regurgitate information passed their way.

Getting a 2230 is hardly failure. They want people who aren’t afraid to take risks and then fail.

The only thing you put on the line when you take the SAT is your ego. Not exactly a big risk.

Actually it’s pretty often a big one. :P

I got a 2090 SAT, and I’m PROUD! :)

“I would argue that someone with a 2230 would have a much better chance at getting into MIT than someone with a 2300-2400. They want thinkers who know how to handle failure; Not people who can regurgitate information passed their way.”

^^ I disagree entirely. While I agree wholeheartedly that a 2230 is a good score and that it will not hurt an applicant, I seriously doubt that, based on the scores alone, someone with 2230 has a “better” chance than someone with a 2300. You seem to be implying that MIT /favors/ “lower” scores; imo, they just don’t consider them after the first glance. If you have the basic score that indicates you can do the work, you’re fine, and in that regard the difference between a 2200 and a 2300 is nonexistent… But by the same token, I certainly hope no one would be PUNISHED for having a higher score.

Agreed. Some people just “get” these tests… or their school grinds it into them.

According to MIT, the scores get you considered, not admitted only. If you have top stats(gpa, rank, sat/act), they will recognize that you can handle the tough courses at MIT. However, if you really want to have a chance at admissions, you have to show passion in something that is deeply connected to you. They don’t care about BS Extracirriculars that only embellish your application. They want to see something that sets you apart from the other thousands of talented applicants. That is what will get you in!

710+710+690 and an MIT freshman. I do a lot of outside stuff http://theplaz.com

I had to really work hard the first semester with 18.01/8.01. I feel that some of the students are really good at classes (come in and do 18.022) and there are some of us who have run businesses, etc.

I would tell you to think about what makes you unique.

sorry, i know this is old, but do you guys know if grouptherapy ended up being accepted by MIT?
