research at ucla

Yeah, the SRP is a terrible place to try and get research positions from unless its your homepage and you're checking it within the hour during the first two weeks of each quarter (when postings are put up), since they get so many responses within the first couple of hours when their listing is posted that they can't accept anymore people.

With the link for the faculty search, just put in the topic that interests you and find a list of professors whose research interests you. They should have the contact information either on that page or just with one link away. Since you said transportation may be a problem, you should call their office number and let them know about your interest and if they have any openings for a prospective UCLA '10 student for the summer. Sometimes they may want to interview you in person before they'll accept you. It may/will take several tries before you find one with an opening. In your case, its probably safe to just email as well, and if you don't get a position, you can try in person during the actual school year when you're here. Just be persistent.

Is finding research like this a pain in the ass at all research universities or do you think that it may be way more difficult since UCLA is a large public school. Do you think I would be better off at a place like Hopkins, as in easier to find research. I mean I just sent out like 20 e-mails now and if I dont get even 1 response by tommrow afternoon I may feel uneasy about going to UCLA and fill out my SIR for JoHo.

ne ideas?....

yeah but funnyman - you are doing the type of volunteer work that high schoolers do. patient escort, as you described, answering phones, stuffing envelopes.

namaste, did you forget to read that I got a research position as a senior in high school this year? That's not lowly high school volunteer work.

confused, use the SRP program, that's how i got my research position. And don't expect professors to respond on saturdays and sundays. They're not at their office! (maybe you're having trouble because it's a weekend)

It's up to you whether you think you'll like JHU more. It's not my job to convince you otherwise :)

I meant to put funnyman and not namaste in my long-winded message . Unless you're going to a place like Harvard or Stanford, you're not going to get a research position on your first attempt by simply contacting a few professors unless you get lucky like funnyman did (even then he said he contacted at least 5 people).

SRP only lists a very small number of labs, and probably half of them are not worth getting involved in.

Don't expect responses the next day (especially on a weekend). These people are very busy and will probably need at least a week before you'd get a response.

And ditto funnyman's last line.
