Research at university I want to transfer to?

Hey,
I am currently in my freshmen year studying mechanical/aeronautical engineering. I have started off well, and hope to maintain a decent GPA and continue to be involved with many activities at my college.

I am considering transferring to some reach schools such as Yale, Cornell, or MIT.
I have heard stories about people doing research at other universities that they are not currently a student at. I was wondering how this could be done? I figure that if an admission committee saw that I was already familiar with the faculty and was helping with research it could help my odds significantly. If there isn't anything like this at all, are there certain study abroad programs or anything that I could do to get involved at one of these reach schools I am considering applying to?

Thanks!

Good question. I’d like to know.

Anyone have an opinion on this?

I’m sorry I am not familiar with research opportunities, but you can do a summer session at the schools you are considering applying to. I took classes at Columbia this summer and was able to get a letter of rec from my professor. I think this would be very helpful since they know you are capable of succeeding at their institution. Also, once enrolled in the summer you will come upon quite a few opportunities and people won’t really treat you like an outsider or anything (at least I can speak for Columbia)

Could you clarify your time line? When did you do the summer session and when did you apply for transfer application?

i have a feeling it will matter very little

what matters most is the content of your rec., not what institution the person writing it is from

dont bank too much on this, having a rec. from somebody at your desired institution is not going to raise any eyebrows

I went to columbia this past summer and applied for spring transfer. Note: I applied to the school of general studies since I can’t apply to Columbia College. I took a year off to dance. In terms of the rec, while I agree that content is what is most important, just because she decided to write it doesn’t mean it had poor content. She is way too important and busy to write this if she didn’t have anything to say.

rcl-

i never asserted or implied that the content of her rec. was poor, what you said, i think, has no bearing on my prior comment

gl

Anyone else?
