How easy is it to get research opportunities as an undergraduate (biology) at Duke?

It'll be a little bit tougher your freshman year, but after that - once you have some of the core courses under your belt - all of my biology major friends have research experience. In other words, it's nearly universal.

Warning, lots of links embedded in the following paragraph. :)

I would check out the Trinity Undergraduate Researh website to see if anything catches your eye. There are some special programs for undergraduate research in the sciences, especially biology. The Howard Hughes Research Fellows program is specifically targeted at rising sophomores interested in biology (more info here). There are also Dannenburg Mentorships, available to pre-major students (e.g. all freshmen, some sophomores).

And of course, if you find yourself in a class with a professor you really like, it can't hurt to ask them about what they're working on, and see if you can squeeze yourself in there. :) I'm a freshman working as a research assistant right now, although not in biology. If you want more info about how I landed the job, PM me.
