I want to apply for a research opportunity with a university's professor over the summer. Has this ever been done before by a high school student? If so, how would one approach a professor?
Also, I talked with my local admission counselor for Vanderbilt. According to him, it would be wise to apply for a research somewhere close, instead of travelling all the way to VU, since colleges don't really care where the research was conducted. Is that true, or do colleges prefer research that take place in their own campus?

Research is research. You can do it anywhere but make sure that professors that you apply to have well equipped labs. How to approach a professor? haha Keep it simple, polite and talk in a really interested, intelligent, determined and knowledgable way
