Research help

Hi i am an international student(from india). I am currently in the sophomore year of my undergraduate engineering program. I am planning on coming to the US for my graduate studies. For this i am giving the GRE this year.
The problem is that i have heard that you have to have conducted some research work if you plan to get into the top schools. But in my country research work is very rare. I dont have any hope of doing research from my college or anywhere around.
Are there any online research groups that i can join or IS THERE ANYTHING OR ANYWAY I CAN ACCOMPALISH SOME RESEARCH.
Plz tell me what counts as research exactly??

I plan on studying computer science for my graduate studies.
U Gotta help me Guys!!!!!!!!!

bump.... bump...

I don't know anything about engineering -- research is mostly important for programs where you will be doing a lot of research in grad school. They want to see your potential as a scholar. So if you're looking at research-intensive programs, it probably applies to you, too.

You're only a sophomore, so you have plenty of time to do research. It doesn't have to be published. It doesn't have to be an "honors" thesis. Just choose a topic, do the research, and write a thesis. Then you can send part of your research as your writing sample and they can judge your abilities.

If you choose this path, find a faculty advisor to help you -- and see if you can get some kind of credit in your department (do you have an honors program that involves research? Could you get course credit for writing a thesis?) Your professors will probably have experience with grad school admissions in the U.S. and they can probably give you a better idea of what you should do.
