Research Ideas

This summer, I will not have a chance to work in a lab with a professor, or with a professor at all. I was wondering if it is still worth it to do research on my own, and maybe enter Siemens and/or Intel. I will be taking classes over the summer, but I know I would still have time. I just need an idea as to what type of project can be done with minimal access to lab equipment, etc. I am thinking about doing something with mathematics, but I don't know where to start looking for ideas. My math background isn't that strong (completed through Calculus BC), so I don't know. I know LaTeX and all, and could easily write up a "scientific paper," but I just need something to get me started. Can anyone help me with this?

Thanks a lot.

what branch of science are you interested in?

Ideally, I would like to do biology research. The only problem with this, is that it requires use of facilities, etc. which I will not have. I was then thinking about math (like stated above), but I don't know where I can find something to work on with my not-so-strong background.
