Hi, Just had a question.

I am currently preforming research in history with a professor, not the sciences that are typically associated with med schools (this may come in the future for me).

Does this add to my med school application as it shows that I have the ability to do this work, or is it seen as a neutral addition where it neither helps or hurts my application?

I believe it helps. Maybe not as much as doing typical bench research, but it certainly should be a positive for you. Some of it is how you "spin" it, if you can somehow relate it to how it will help you as a doctor in the future. Plus you should have a good letter of rec which is always beneficial.

It helps. I don't know whether it helps you as much as science research. I suspect it does not.

But no question, it helps.

Sorry to piggyback on your thread, but I have a similar question.

What about research in biomedical engineering? Will that be equivalent to science research or would I need to do more research in addition to that?

biomedical engineering research is good too. do research in what you enjoy, not what you think would look good on an app.
