I can’t really answer questions about pre-med other than to say that a lot of students seem to be in it. Nor can I offer comparisons to Colgate. The study abroad programs are fabulous and a very high percentage of students go abroad for at least a semester junior year. Colby has programs in Spain, France and I believe St. Petersburg, but there are many Colby-approved programs in other parts of the world and students can also propose a program and seek approval. S and several of his Colby friends are in South America now in Colby-approved programs. I think almost everyone he knows is abroad somewhere, including Australia and many places in Europe. There are also opportunities to travel abroad for a shorter time period during Jan Plan.

As far as research, there are opportunities but it’s hard to say a lot more without knowing your major. I think Colby participates in some kind of research consortium with other Maine colleges. Research opportunities develop as you get into your major and make connections with professors in your field.

How’s the research opportunities in the Mol. Biology major?

Biology is one of if not the biggest program at Colby. Science buildings dominate our campus.

I can say, too, that as the parent of an incoming first-year who had to choose between Colgate and Colby, one of the BIG reasons Colby won out was the superiority of their study abroad. Colgate advertises many programs, but they are comparatively rigid about actual participation, whereas Colby actively encourages study abroad, and works hard to facilitate whatever you dream of doing. Colgate also has far stricter and narrower rules about the portability of financial aid. (we love Colby!)
