research on sorority stereotypes... HELP ME.

so... i am working on my last paper for an analytical writing course, and we are supposed to examine a specific college stereotype and how that stereotype changes from campus to campus across the country and whatever. the stereotype i have to work on is sororities. i want to avoid generalizations about the entire sorority system and would like to look at individual houses and whatnot, and since i’m not greek and i haven’t interacted with the greek system much i was wondering if anyone out there could help me out? some houses that know i need to mention are delta delta delta, delta zeta, kappa kappa gamma, kappa alpha theta, alpha phi, kappa delta and well i guess basically anymore that you guys know anything about essentially. thanks so much! :)

What exactly do you want to know?

basically which house is known as the party house, smart house, fun house, nice house etc., any stereotypes really

I won't say what school I'm from, but from what I've seen at a few campuses

DDD - sluts that somehow manage to live up to their reputation
Alpha Phi - love to party but actually nice girls
KKG - ugly

tri-delts: easy
KKG: smoking hot girls that are rich and snobby
KAT: well-rounded girls that are pretty, smart and down to earth (relatively)
alpha phi: underrated with a lot of cute girls

doesn't it depend on the campus? i know those reputations that you are posting dont correlate with the chapters everywhere.

yeah, if you could post your region, or school if you feel comfortable, that would be great

It depends very much on the campus. Two chapters of the same sorority (or frat, the same applies to them) at different schools can be radically different in reputation and character.

Not Tri-Delt. They are sluts everywhere.

Ehh, doesn't seem so much at my school. They seem to be a bit more proper/preppy girls to me

yea you would need to break this down for school by school bc a sorority's rep at one school might be (and often is) completely different at another

well that is sort of what i am aiming for, is the differences by school to see what if anything makes it that way, i know that there is not going to be one that has the same rep everywhere but some are so drastically different (for example tri-delt at my school is very exclusive but at another school near by it's the exact opposite) and i want to look at that more in depth

if you are cool with listing your school that would be great, if not saying location and type of school (big ten, small lib arts, ivy league etc.) would be just as helpful

those stereotypes that I posted are from a larger west coast school with an active greek scene that is traditional yet laidback at the same time

At one school I know:

Tri-delts - fat girls who don't think they're fat
Kappa Alpha Theta - blond hot girls who at one point were perpetually #1 in grades every year, but rapidly lost that focus and are now full of blond hot dumb girls
Alpha Phi - far and away the best chapter on this particular campus though generally APhi doesn't have a great notoriety nation wide. Girls are for the most part hot, but they have some pretty average ones, almost all are intelligent, and all are fun. Have somewhat of a jersey chaser reputation which is earned - particularly by their hottest members, but still a great group of girls.
KKG - Overall a solid house - lots of pretty girls, tend to be pretty territorial from year to year about which fraternities they hang out with.
KD - Kind of a mixture of girls - fairly middle of the pack in pretty much everything.
Pi Beta Phi - either hot, slutty girls or fat, ugly, slutty girls. All like to party. Love to brag about how well they can party.

At another school I know

Tri-delts - smartest girls on campus, but beautiful as well.
Kappa Alpha Theta - mixture of girls, but all pretty. Grades aren't their strong point though some of them are extremely smart. Very conscious of where girls are from and favor big city girls.
KKG - BLOND! My freshman year, I heard they had 36 new members and 33 of them were blonds. Love to party, always fun.

At another school I know:
Pi Beta Phi's - beautiful, beautiful girls (probably the hottest house I know of), yet fairly modest (all things considered). Many of the girls are super nice.
KKG's - fanatical about being Kappas. Know quite a few of the girls have Kappa related tatoos (not so weird for guys, but definitely odd for girls). Mixture of hot and not-so-hot girls.
Tri-delts - average looks, but incredibly laid back, sweet girls. Down to earth.

I'll have to write these down Bigredmd haha. From what little I've seen, I'd say your right on. Alpha Phi girls are amazing. What do you think about the Delta Gamma ones?

DGs are awesome! (But that's coming from one...:))

Wow - I really wonder what the whole point of this is as it's very disrespectful and degrading to a number of people. We all know that stereotyping is wrong and I don't understand why stereotyping of certain groups is still considered ok.

If you think about it - any group that actually lived up to these "reputations" would not exist for long. Would you join a sorority that was known as a "bunch of sluts" or the "fat girls " ? I don't know many intelligent college aged women that would. It's ridiculous to group any organization or group based on anyone's limited knowledge of certain people within that organization-

And folks - if you insist on perpetuating these rumors at least be civil - if you need to say " the preppy sorority", the "smart sorority" , "not as popular, but nice" , the "sporty sorority" at least you are giving some description without degrading an entire group of girls. Maybe your sister will go and join one of these groups in the future and you might not like the reputation you helped perpetuate. : )

chocoman- that was offensive :( I'm a Tri-Delt and our chapter on my campus is the best sorority- we've ruled Greek Awards for several years. We are very much on very left side of the spectrum- more of angels than devils. We don't live up to the national reputation at all.

On other hand, our KAT girls....

There is no way you can generalize so widely by sorority. Every chapter is different and thus will have a different reputation. It would be pointless to try and do it.

Erm... I only know about Alabama...
but Tri Delts were nice but snooty,
and DGs (when there was still a DG house on campus), were known for being nice, down-to-earth, etc.
Other places: just the opposite. I really think it's the girls, not the house, that makes it.
