Research opportunities as an undergrad

Hi, I was wondering how easy it was to get say a laboratory research internship at Brown with professors as a Brown undergrad. Also, are internships mostly just doing grunt work or is it really cutting edge stuff that you publish research papers for?

Thanks! Current students please comment!

Getting into research is for the most part a matter of speaking to the professor about your interests, and then joining the lab. Brown professors are by and large extremely welcoming of undergrads performing research with them.

Also, it is inevitable that doing research involves some degree of “grunt work” (yes, even the cutting edge stuff that results in papers). You won’t be asked to come in specifically to wash test tubes or make media, but do expect to have to do some of those as routine tasks that are part of conducting experiments.

Brown professors are, in my experience, willing to give credit for an undergrad’s contribution to research. If someone in the lab publishes a paper that you contributed to, then expect to see your name somewhere on the paper.

thanks man!

if you don’t care about being paid (and you should make that very clear if it’s the case) it’s extremely easy to find things
