Are QUALITY (i.e useful, publishable) biomedical research positions (specifically in microbiology/virology) widely available to Undergraduate students?

I've heard Duke has great biomedical research programs, I'm just wondering how much energy and effort they devote to getting undergrads involved with the research.

Check out the Howard Hughes Research Fellows Program. It's a great way for freshmen to get their foot in the door. I did it the summer between my freshman and sophomore year and now I'm going to do Independent Study in the same lab as a junior and should be able to get published.

Research Fellows Program

It seems like anyone and everyone has a research position somewhere. There is a question about how much is just lab work and how much is real research though.
