Research opportunities at UC vs CSU

Hi everyone, I am studying at a community college in California. I am considering transfer to one of top school in the CSU system, like Cal Poly SLO or Cal Poly Pomona. I am majoring in computer science. My GPA is about 3.8 with mostly As. However, one of my friend said that I should consider some school in UC system because they provide better research program because I plan to go to graduate school after graduating from undergraduate. So I want to ask: Do two systems, UC and CSU, provide the same opportunities for UROP ( undergraduate research opportunities program) or UC is better in providing research opportunities than CSU? About graduate school, I mean top school like UT austin, Stanford, MIT or UCB . Thanks a lot.

Can somebody help me with this question please? Thank you so much.

UCs are better known to have research programs over CSUs. You might know it is very hard to transfer into the CS program at SLO. Have you looked into UC TAGs?

UCs unquestionably do more research than do CSUs so,they offer more opportunities for students to participate. Since you are there for such a short time, it is hard to say how available ‘research’ is to students who arrive as Jr transfers. You’d probably need to be pretty aggressive before your enrollment began to engage in really cool stuff.

Not your question but, while i am here… with a 3.8, you are a strong candidate for any school that accepts a large number of transfers (Stanford and MIT don’t) That said, CS at the top UCs is very competitive, they use holistic admissions and don’t use TAG, making them inconsistent and unpredictable (particularly for transfer admits).

Use TAG to lock down your transfer to Davis (or another UC). Better safe than sorry.
