What are some opportunities for a entering college freshman for research that I could do to compensate my summer school costs and pad my resume?

I looked everywhere on the web and all I could find was REU (only for sophomores though)

any advice is much appreciated!

ummm i posted this in ‘college admissions’ and i guess it was moved here… not a double post haha

REUs generally prefer juniors, and then sophomores, so it’ll be really difficult to get one the summer after your freshman year. Your best bet would be to find a professor in the department you’re interested in working in, talking with them a little bit, and seeing if they have any positions available. Often times schools will have undergraduate research grants (they go by all sorts of names, so ask around) which can range from a few hundred to a few thousand dollars. They can be useful in supporting yourself over the summer or showing a professor that you’ll be fairly cheap labor.

If you’re talking about working at a school the summer before you start college, well, good luck. I’d start by e-mailing professors doing work you think is interesting (possibly calling on the phone or making an appointment to stop by if you live near the college now) and working towards a job that way.
