Research Opportunities in High School?

A lot of people seem to have 'research' as another thing on their resume and i was just wondering if anyone knows how exactly to come by these research opportunities and what to do to get them. Thanks!

Research is actually pretty easy to find. My school had a program called Intel Research. Through that program, they told us to find labs and help scientists perform research. Problem is that labs fill up really quickly, especially for summer time. You'd have a hard time finding a lab considering you probably don't have any experience. I found my lab in my junior year of high school. The best thing to do is to find hospitals and universities and medical schools that have research departments and email them your resume showing your curiosity. Who knows, they may take you. But if you think research will help tremendously, it wont in your college apps. Grades come first. Research is just extra, sure it'll set you apart from the crowd, but ivys and big research schools are the only ones who put great emphasis on this. Hope this helps.

Well i'm a Junior in high school right now too. Grades are my main focus. I just got my ACT score which was a 34 and now i'm looking for other things i can do to help strengthen my application.

Thanks. Any advice is really helpful.

Do you live near any universities? It would help if you emailed professors in a field you're interested in, and asked if they might have the time to take on a high school student. Send your resume and an explanation of why you're interested in working in their lab.

Another way is to apply for summer research programs, though this process is much more selective.

Well it is possible to find a lab. Problem is that it is sort of too late. Most labs are already booked for the summer. I suggest choose a topic that interests you and email as many professors as possible. There is no guarantee that you will get a position and even if you do, not many professors want to take the time to train students. Trust me, I speak from experience. Basically every college and or medical school has a research dept., so email as many professors as possible showing your interest in their field and pray for the best. Hope this helps.
