Does anyone have information or personal experience in reguards to research opportunities at Amherst? My d is interested in bio/chem/physics/math. How competitive are research assistant jobs on campus?

Here is a link for an on-campus research opportunity many first-years/sophomores take advantage of. Also, the Career Center does a great job of helping students find summer research programs and internships either around the five college area or closer to home.

Research assistant jobs are pretty easy to come by, once you know a professor enough to ask them about it - I have several friends working in labs this semester and over the summer. As for TA positions, it’s as simple as applying to the department and working out whether you’ll be a lecture TA (and host office hours once a week) or a lab TA.

Hope this helps!

There’s the summer research fellowships. Or you can really just ask a Professor if you are interested in their work and want to work with them. You can even work during the school year if you have time. It is really that easy. I never found an unapproachable Professor there.

Thanks for the great info!
