Research Opportunities

Hi, I’m a senior in high school. I have one more college application left (yay!), and I am interested in an internship or some sort of research for engineering or science in general. I applied to really competitive schools (Yale, Stanford, Brown), and I think an intership could help me stand out. Right now, I think I will major in engineering or physics. I know that I shouldn’t do anything just to build up a resume, but I am genuinly interested in research. I looked for positions in August, but with no results. So, my question: does anyone know of any opportunities in the Chicago area? Or any search engines online? I would appreciate any help. Thanks!

The best thing to do is to look at the faculty pages of local universities in the Chicago area. As you browse through departments that you are interested in, look at the bio's of the professors in those departments. Almost always it lists their research/fields of interest, and the papers they have published. If you find a topic that interests you, email the professor and ask to meet, and tell them you are a high school student interested in getting research experience. Often they will be flattered, and if they need help, or have extra time, they will let you come in and assist them or even perform your own projects. A good thing to do is make yourself knowledgable in the topic of your interest. The best way to do this is to find a few of the articles of the professor you email, and read through them. This will allow you to have a conversation on why you really want to help them, and it will make you look interested and knowledgable.

Thank you sooo much!

i wouldn't count on this impacting admissions too much if you are just starting in Senior year, but if you are genuinely interested in getting the experience then by all means u should go after it

All the best
