for any current students
does Duke provide any substantial amount of research experiences available for undergraduate students?

um, i am only an accepted student (dont know if ill matriculate), but at least in the sciences, you can be doing research from your freshmen year if you want, ya just gotta contact a professor....

I'm just a mom...is it okay if I stick my two cents in here? ;-)

There are opportunities in the engineering department, both in the labs, and with projects like the DELTA Smarthouse. One of the reasons my son chose a school like Duke was because of undergraduate research opportunities. He's done just a little bit this year, but hopes to get more involved next year. I think sophomore year is a good time to get started...for some it helps to just use the first year to settle in and see where their interests really lie.

do any other duke students have insight? this is a really important topic in my decision

As a Pratt kid, I know that one of the deans of Pratt has been spamming my inbox with internship opportunities since the beginning of second semester. I also know of the Pratt Fellows program for upperclassmen where Engineers use three semesters to do research. Over freshman summer, Duke offers students the chance to do research with either the Bouncer Foundation (I think this is BME only) and the Howard Hughes fellowship program. There's a lot of information here. http://www.aas.duke.edu/trinity/research/ And if you just want to get your feet wet doing lab work during the school year, there are always advertisements in the chronicle looking for lab assistants, but it helps if you have work-study or are willing to work for free.

The Bouncer Research Fellows Program is not just for BME majors. All majors can apply. See this website for more info http://medschool.duke.edu/bouncer.htm
